There are over 500 Italian restaurants in NYC ... hard to pick the very best one, there are so many. It depends on what type of Italian food you like.
Babbo at 110 Waverly Place in the W Village has 4 stars from critics.
Then there's Baldora in the theater district at 249 W 49th. His dad owns Rao's but you have a better shot at getting a table here. The apple doesn't fall far from the tree.
You can also take a look at restaurant.com where you can get a $25 coupon for $10 ... you just put in the zip code and the list of local choices pops up.
You can also check out reviews in New York Magazine

Babbo. Mario Batali creates the main mind-blowing pasta. it relatively is all selfmade, none of that boxed crap different eating places bypass off to us on. The pasta will soften on your mouth. each and every of the flavors come alive. no rely if that's only too expensive for you, pass to Lupa. nevertheless mind-blowing and great high quality of nutrition, in effortless terms slightly much low priced. Bon Appetit!
