Besides preventing an infection from starting at the site of your tooth extraction, it's to keep the nasty bacteria in your mouth from traveling to your heart and other organs and starting up a new infection there. People with heart conditions are ALWAYS put on antibiotics--sometimes even prior to--major, invasive dental work.

Supposedly prevent secondary infection of the wound and encourage healing.
They do not prevent dry sockets - these are not an infection, but an early breakdown of the blood clot. Very painful but not dangerous. Common risk factors are smoking, lower extractions, and difficult extractions.
There is increasing prevalence of antibiotic resistance and allergies, so routine precribing of antibiotics for "prevention" in post-op wisdom teeth is questionable.
You would be much better off using a chlorhexidine mouthwash, preferably starting a day prior to surgery.

The amoxicillin antibiotic will help to prevent any bacteria from creating an infection in your open sores. A dry socket is not a deep bone infection. If you happen to get a dry socket, you need to see your dentist and they will pack an antibiotic pellet into the socket and it wont hurt anymore.

The amount of medication you can handle depends on your weight, but amoxicillin is an anti-biotic and is perfectly safe to take along with Advil or other pain relievers. 400mg of pain relief medication is fine, and, depending on how much you weigh, even 600 would be acceptable for a few days until most of the discomfort has gone away. You may want to try eating something soft before you take it all though, sometimes taking medication on an empty stomach can make you nauseous

Amoxicillin was given to you to prevent or treat any bacterial infections of the mouth. You should be very careful to consume all of this antibiotic as described by your dentist. Failure to do so could lead to the bacteria in you mouth becoming resistant to the antibiotic and causing severe, hard to treat bacterial infections.
Dry socket is a deep bone infection which can become fatal if not properly treated.
