what characteristics people are given at birth? For example if they are hideously ugly, mentally retarded...I know god makes everyone beautiful in their own way. But it seems god has made these people 'beautiful' in a way that would make their life hell. How does god decide who to give bad characteristics (or should I say, characteristics less commonly accepted as positive by the 99.999 percent of the general population) that can't be changed at birth? Does he roll dice? I know this is only a short life before our eternal life in heaven but it seems it is still unfair as some people have short/good life before eternal happyness and others have short/bad life before eternal happyness. I don't get it...

dmajor, beauty has always been determined by who has characteristics that make them most likely to pass their DNA onto their children...but i wasn't talking JUSt about physical appearance. What about people with many other handicaps? Even in ancient accounts a women has said 'I like men to look as if they could wrestle off an animal.'

I don't think anyone knows why God gives the unchangeable characteristics to people that He does. It really isn't all that important, it is just as you say that 99.99% of people have decided just what should be the ideal, but God is not swayed by propular demand. The important thing is not what happens to us in life or what we are handed by God to work with and live with but what is important is how we respond to the circumstances of life. If we respond with bitterness it will cause damage that will affect us and all those around us, but if we respond with acceptance it brings glory to God and brings joy and fulfillment in anyone's life. The problem is that we have made such a big thing out of this life when we are only here for a few years and have totally neglected the afterlife which lasts for eternity. When you get those two things in proper perspective it really doesn't matter what you go through here on this earth but what matters is your eternal destiny.

Okay, try looking at it this way. If god sees the beauty in everything, then how would he (or she) know that he is making ugly things? Everything he made would be beautiful in his eyes upon creation.

What people do to those creations based on their own ignorance or weakness is not God's fault. Nor should any creator be obligated to alter perfection to fit the misguided perceptions of part of his creation.

Just because most children don't like Tabasco sauce doesn't make it any less yummy.

Well a great deal if this charecteristics would be shaped by the child & thier parents. I would assume god takes a good look at the surroundings as to where the child would be born & decide accordingly.. Maybe thier previous births karmas play a role? I dont believe in reincarnation, but its seems a good reason for decision, dont you think?

Genetics have more to do with a person's appearance than anything else. We all inherited sin from Adam and the way that sinfulness manifests itself physically is more evident in some than others. For all of us, it is the choices we make rather than the way we are treated that God is more concerned with. This is not the real life--it is yet to come.

One big point I'll bring out is that people's perception of beauty changes over time... so if you get right to it, it isn't really a God thing whether or not you're considered beautiful. That depends more on the time period and how people see beauty.

Romans 9:19-21
19You will say to me then, "Why does he still find fault? For who can resist his will?" 20But who are you, O man, to answer back to God? Will what is molded say to its molder, "Why have you made me like this?" 21Has the potter no right over the clay, to make out of the same lump one vessel for honored use and another for dishonorable use?

Why don't you ask why he made people feel these characteristics were unacceptable in the first place.

It's not god, It's people. It's not divine intervention, it's nature. If you look at your question again, do you see "Natural selection"?
