There are whole books on the topic, and several Web sites offer a free database that offers even more information about the history of a name. Here's one I found in a quick search:

You mean last name? Surnames of animals like Fox, Lamb, Wolf are English. They were chosen because of their pagan symbolism. They thought the person with that last name would take on the characteristics of that animal; strength of a wolf, etc.
