Depends on the individual restaurant, most usually have a small selection of starters, lots of mains in each section : meat, fish, veggie, then a selection of desserts! I've been to some restaurants where they've had 10 main courses and others that have had 30 main courses to choose from.

Depends on what u mean by a typical menu. There are different types of menus the most common 2 are :

(1) Table dote Menu.
This is a set menu which means there is no choice as such,
(the menu is written & thats what u get) depending on the
occasion there may b a choice of fish or meat making it
2 choices.

(2) A La Carte Menu.
This is a menu where there are choices of entres, mains,
desserts etc..
So there could b up to 20 mains for a
restaurant with a seating capacity of 200 to 250
customers at a time.
On the other hand on any average menu theres
usually between 5 - 8 mains available, the reason being
that the chef should b sure to cover all the common food
products EG..he/she should ave a fish dish, a beef dish, a
chicken dish, a vegetarian dish and a pasta dish hence the
minimum total of mains being 5.

Hope this helps

I've found that the classier the restaurant, the fewer choices they have. That's a good thing! Too many choices means the restaurant has tons of stuff waiting around in case somebody happens to order it. Fewer choices means more people order each dish on the menu so the food turns over quicker and everything is fresher. Also greatly reduces your chances of eating something that was cooked last week and just came out of the microwave!

My favorite restaurant for example, never has more than 8 choices or entrees, 5 starters, and 4 desserts. And the soup is "soup of the day" so you know it's always freshly made!

There is only one main course. Thus the name. There can be any number of other courses depending on the dinner and how it is served. These can include appetizer, soup, entree, main course, salad, desert, aperitif.

If you are asking about giving choices for the main course or entree, then the answer is there needn't be any choices. It is improper as a guest to expect choices. You politely eat what is offered, or you don't eat. If the host should offer a choice, that's fine, but the host is not required to offer a choice.

That should cover private home parties.

If you are planning for a group or organization banquet, then there are usually three entree choices, one fowl (typically chicken), one beef, and one seafood (typically fish).

That's hard to answer. Every restaurant is different.

I've been to restaurants that have more than 50 items on their entire menu and I've been to restaurants with only 20 items on their entire menu.

But your quesiton was about main courses - and just an fyi in the restaurant biz, they're entrees. (not main courses)

Most have a mininum of 2 beef entrees, 2 chicken entrees, 2 seafood entrees, 2 pasta entrees and maybe even a pork entree.

But again every restaurant is different. I own a restarurant and all I sell is soup, salad and sandwiches. There really is no "main course." Soup is my main dish and I have 50 Soups.

I frequent a Mexican restaurant and they've got soooo many entrees on their menu - buritto entrees (beef, chicken, seafood, and pork), enchillida entrees (beef, chicken, pork,)

It's different with every restaurant, but a safe bet is.

2 beef
2 chicken
2 seafood
2 pasta
and at least one pork....

hope this helps...

Between 1 and 200
The best guide I can give is that the fewer the choices the better chance you have of being served fresh food - rather than from a microwave (or worse)

3 to 8 would be a good sign!

By main course, I assume you mean the number of different entrees on a menu. That would depend on the size of the resteraunt, but for a medium size local place usually 12 - 15 choices ( not counting salads, soups or appetizers of course )

Funny I knew what you meant as soon as I read your question, strange your first 5 or so answerers didn't. I would say about 15, 20 at the most. Most kitchens can't really cope with more.
