My friend's mother is schizophrenic and she has stopped taking her medicine, paying the electric bill, and does various extreme things that go with her illness (picking fights with neighbors, making up stories, etc.). Though she has not become physically harmful (yet), they are afraid that she will put herself in a situation where she can be. She has not been to the doctor in a year and refuses. Can they check her into a hospital?

Yes. If she is threat to herself or others, she can be put in the hospital.

Yes I believe it is possible to do this your friends mom is in a situation that could unintentionally put herself and others in harms way she is not controlling her condition therefore she must be taken in for help do not do this on your own if anything
call for an ambulance explain the situation and they would probably have no problem transporting her to the hospital. First thing though let her physician know what is going on and see what he/she suggests.

I hesitated to answer this question because I have never lived in Texas. But reading over the answers made it apparent the advice given in them was bad. First the symptoms you cited are not those of schizophrenia. I don't like the label schizophrenia. Those who hear voices, see things and develop delusions about them are a special class of those labeled schizophrenic. A group of British psychiatrists have started a campaign to abolish the schizophrenic label, CASL. They propose instead using the more scientifically accurate designation, Dopamine Dysfunction Disorder, DDD. The label schizophrenia merely serves to "cancel the life of the individual to whom it is applied." DDD patients are rarely violent. Their disease is serious and is probably due to a neurochemical imbalance in the brain (like diabetes being due to a lack of insulin) rather than a character disorder and they need support. This woman is the guy's(?) mother. The one suggestion that he lie about her being violent in order to get her committed is a gross disservice to his mother if he uses it. If she is psychotic (DDD) she needs to take her meds and calmly getting her to acknowledge this is what you should do if she has medication. If she doesn't get her some by going to a Dr. and explaining the situation to him.

YES! My sister, brother and I grew up with a schizophrenic mother. Here's what you do...BECAUSE you can't truly, legally force her in, you LIE! I'm not kidding. She needs to call the police and tell them she threatened her with a knife, that she's got a history of mental illness, she hasn't been taking her meds, she's unstable and that she (your friend) is in fear for her own safety. She must be a threat to herself or others before they will commit her, and even then it is ONLY for 30 days. In those 30 days, they will make her take her meds and get normal (as normal as she ever gets) but think about this. If this woman is sick...no one will help her if your friend doesn't lie. She's not lying to harm her...she's lying to help. Before you start thinking I'm a big fat lying control freak...this advice was given to us at age 11, by a police officer and we used it several times. It was the only way to get her any help.

You only can if she is a harm to herself. It sounds like in your case that she might be and is continuing to be even more harmful, so I would recommend calling a hospital and asking them the procedure for doing so.

Yeah, she has the nerve to accuse us liberals of not working, but for some reason, she won't tell us what she does for a living. Also, when I told her earlier that I work as a Spanish tutor at a college and at a natural foods store, she said that my jobs were "pitiful" and that I probably earned no more than $50 k a year. What a snob! So much for the "work ethic" she was touting in one of her "questions"!

Your friend can and should. Your friend should contact the local sheriff department. They can and will bring her to a hospital.

Get the police involved too
Then take her in
