Hi! First question: do you have the Windows XP disc? If so, boot from it by setting the CD-ROM as the first boot device in the system BIOS, then when booted into the setup program, press R when prompted for a choice. When you are in the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, let it finish counting down, then when prompted, hit 1 then Enter. Then type your admin password if you have one, then when you are at the command prompt, type FIXBOOT and press Enter. Next, type FIXMBR, press Enter, and when prompted to overwrite, press Y and Enter. Then reboot your machine, and all should be well!

From your brief description it sounds like your hard drive is failing. When you boot your system in safe mode. It does not load anything into memory. It runs directly off the system hard drive. It is my most sincere hope that you been keeping accurate backups of your system, and all of your important files. I wish you luck!

Get your original windows CD and boot from it. You may have to set your bios to do this. Repair the windows installation, then run microsoft updates.
