It's the weight of the contents without the packaging, or gross. Each unit has a gross, a net (contents and packaging) and tare (the weight in this case of the packaging). so it means you 34g of jam plus the weight of the bottle. In fluids it means that the inside of the container contains x ml litre, etc.

I think they are "standard" EU sizes. In other words I think someone in Brussels sat down and said that standard sizes for jam jars are........and give a selection of sizes,standard sizes for washing powder are......... and so on.

It seems an almighty waste of time unless it matters to you that these things are in the same range of sizes where ever you shop in the EU.
