Are you pretty much stuck paying the expensive prices at the airports to eat or is there an alternative (other than wait and not eat)? I haven't been to all the airports in the world, maybe some of them are reasonable.

1) Bring your own food, if you know in advance.
2) This never fails.
a) Look for a Chinese- restaurant
b) Ask for steam rice
c) Ask for the smallest vegetable plate
d) Take some soy sauce
And mix all together. Your are going to get a very cheap, nutritious meal. Never fails. If anyway not enough money skip the vegetable plate, anyway lots of carbs.

Good luck!!

It really all depends on the airport. I don't recommend leaving the airport unless you have a very, very long layover (over 4 hours or so). Too many things can go wrong and you might not get back in time for your flight. Imagine taking a cab a few miles away from the airport to get a bite to eat and not being able to find a cab to take you back! Plus once you've paid the cab fares, you're spending a lot more on lunch than if you'd stuck around the airport.

Some airports have lots of reasonably priced choices right in the airport, some don't. Vegas has a Pizza Hut, Orlando has a sandwich place (can't remember the name), etc. Many airports also have a hotel on the airport grounds that you can get to via a walkway or tunnel, like Orlando and Philadelphia. Hotel prices aren't better than airport prices but you would get a better selection and nicer atmosphere. So if I had a long layover, I would look for the airport hotel first.

If you know you have a layover, bring a granola bar or trail mix or something. It's a good idea to do even if you don't have a layover. Bring an empty water bottle to fill up at the fountains. Fast food is the cheapest, but its still more expensive than if you weren't in the airport. I am not aware of any airport with reasonably priced food.

The best thing to do is to bring your own sandwich or something. But Wendy's at my airport is the least expensive.
