Uh... forget the doctors and drugs. I have that kind of personality, and here's what I do:

1) keep busy. Find something to do --house cleaning, web design, answering questions at yahoo here helps, get a pet (or three in my case), whatever... just keep yourself busy and don't steep yourself in negativity.

2) avoid negative people. If it's one thing that can ruin your day it's an asshole.

3) always look for positive outcomes and positive facets to things that depress you. It sounds stupid and 'airy fairy', but it can really change your attitude toward something that depresses you. Always find something in whatever it is that you can use to your advantage!

4) hang around people who like to cheer you up.

5) pay attention to foods that depress you!!! Avoid them whenever you can! Keep to foods that energize you!

On the Psychoanalytic Treatment of the Depressive Personality

Grigoris Vaslamatzis, M.D.

In order to discuss the depressive personality we have first to distinguish between this clinical entity and other types of depressive psychopathology that might also be chronic. The character traits and psychodynamics of the depressive personality confirm that there is a special group of patients, who belong to a depressive disorder continuum. The particular technical problems that depressive personality present are: (1) the inability to enjoy anything and the consequences of this on the therapist's experience and interventions, and (2) the negative therapeutic reaction which threatens the analytic process and the therapist's competence. If we combine transference/extratransference interpretations with an “empathetic understanding” approach to systematic confrontation and interpretation, we can therefore justify the need for a slightly modified psychoanalytic technique in the treatment of the depressive personality.

of course there are. some doctors identify depressive personality as borderline personality disorder. which is caused by the way you were brought up, may be your childhood was not according the expectations of your upbringing and so suffer from depression as a result, and thus can be depressed throughout your life, unless you seek treatments from your psychologist, other wise why not read more books and read about depressions

Absolutely - go to a doctor. There are many new drugs that effectively treat depression.

I would recommend Cymbalta - after two and a half years on Effexor I have found Cymbalta to me much better, with fewer negative effects.

Cognitive behavioral therapy when done by a Licensed Clinical Psychologist is VERY effective for treating depression, including low grade, constant depression (aka dysthymia). This is probably what you mean by "depressive personality".

Yep, been there!!!
First meds and find out what the problems are
Second, eat right, get exercise and decide to be happy at anything you do.
Third get off the meds
Everyday is a gift, and being happy is a choice.
That was my path and it worked for me
Good luck

Short, clear and simple; and you can even post your question and contact the author regarding particular subject you are interested in

I have tried anti-depressants, vitamins, counselling, self help books & tapes and they don't work for me. I find the best way (although it's hard to get motivated) is lots of excersise. but don't overdo it. It gives you a natural high & it really does make you feel good.
