It's an epidemic. I had a nurse in the doctor's office I'd never seen before call me 'dear'. The lady at the homeless shelter I went to yesterday (to donate) called me sweetheart. The cashier at the bank calls me darlin' and our waitress at IHOP calls me angel. And I'm just not that nice! I told the nurse my name was Mrs. N---- and when I got to know her a little better, she could call me 'Sue' - and was she ever offended! The rest of them I've just given up on!

If it bothers you, just try to address them by ma'am (or sir), and see if they get the hint. I don't like to be called "sweetie, honey, hun, etc." by older males. I think it's quite disrespectful, so I can see why it bothers you.

Sometimes it's a habit from talking to your kids, husband, etc. It's like when you can't remember the name of the person you're scolding, and you end up going through everyone and the dog's name. I'm not a "hun" type of person, but I've even slipped up a few times. My husband accidentally told his boss "I love you," over the phone just because he was so used to ending the conversation that way with me (boy was he embarrassed.) Sometimes, it just happens.

Some places are different than others- with a different culture and ethics. And some people are more personable, so everyone's family in their eyes.

Its not just truck stop waitresses its all of them! Please if anyone out here is a waitress please don't call your costumers sweetie, honey OR sweet heart! This is offensive to me personally.Last year on my birthday my fiance' and I went to dinner with my father and his fiance'.Now I turned 20 that day.(I look older than I am )and my fiance' is 28.The waitress over herd us talking about age and when she came back by mentioned how she was the same age as my fiance'.When she came to get our order she got every ones except mine and then came to me and said "So what can I get for the little lady?"I near about flew off the handle. She left.Through out the night she constantly called me sweetie, honey, sweet heart,UGH!!!!Then to make it worse she was hitting on my fiance'.So when we got ready to leave I went to her and nicely asked do you cater weddings?I pointed to Pat and said we would really love for the restaurant to cater the wedding.LOL She near about fell over.It was beautiful!

They are just trying to be nice...come on, give em a break. They work mad hours, for little pay, on their feet all day, and they are still nice enough to call you honey!!!! Get over yourself! Not only that, they get hit on by greasy old truck drivers all day. So be nice!

,You should be more concerned with the service you receive. If it offends you that much, simply tell them yourself that you do not want to be called ( HONEY ) They could just come up, be cold to you and take your order and not come back to check on you. If this is your biggest problem, let me tell you, you have NO PROBLEMS!

It's a term of endearment. Take it as that.
They know you're not they're "honey". It's just a simple expression.
