I am going on a round the world trip in May and I plan on staying in Bangkok for 3-4 weeks.
I intend to get to Bangkok (either from Ko Samui or London depending on which way round the world I go!) and then fly to Hanoi and go south, then through Cambodia and back to Bangkok again - so I will be visiting there twice.

Which area do you think I should stay in? I would like to do a few tours and also train at a couple of Muay Thai camps if possible as well.

Thanks

THE BEL-AIR PRINCESS HOTEL it,s in a quiet st off sukhmvit road , about 100 yards from sky train & shopping . There a bar called GULIVERS in same st with FREE INTERNET & good food also there a supermarket across the st with a american style diner which aslo sell,s great food
The hotel can arrange tours for you ,i think 3/4 weeks in BKK will be to much as the smog ( like fog) will get to you & make you cough
I have stayed there 4 times in the last 3 years & going again next year

I would recommend a hotel called the Asia Hotel. It isn't expensive, it is clean, it has a connection passage to one of the main central Sky Train stations which will allow you to explore the city further and best of all, its right by Siam Square which is the main shopping area. From here you can go to the MBK Centre, the Siam Square Centre as well as the Paragon Centre - all great malls. Asia Hotel is also prety close to one of Bangkok's premier attractions - Jim Thompson's house, a pretty interesting Teak house built by Silk Trder Jim Thompson in the 1800s. Furtermore, because the Asia Hotel has such an easy route to the Sky Train you're in a great position to explore the rest of BKK. Personally, i would recommend getting the Sky Train to the River where you can jump on the Chao Pryia Express which is a boat service that goes up and down the main river in BKK. This is a great way to see this part of Bangkok but made even better becase it stops right by the Wat Pho and the Golden Palace. If you get off at the stop called Banglamphu you can head to the Khao San Road area which is where all the Backpackers stay. There's loads of markets here aimed at tourists. Finally, if you're lucky enough to be in Bangkok on a weekend you should really get the sky train to Mo Chit station where you can visit Chatachook weekend market. It is massive and you'll need a good few hours here to wander around. Enjoy.

Dan

I am sitting in the new Bangkok Airport answeribng this question. The city is HUGE and there is accomodation from VERY cheap to fairly expensive.

Determine EXACTLY what you want to do, and then decide where to stay. e.g. A lot of the Night Life is around Silom street, Patpong for girls and Silom 2 and 4 for boys.

The night market and one Muy Thai stadium, and Lumpini Park is also (on or) close to Silom. Do a search on the internet, finmd a hotel that suits your pocket and then ask here whether the answereres think it is a nice hotel.

Stay as close to where you want to go in Bangkok.

Bangkok is a fascinating, intoxicating and disorderly place, filled with views, odors, thrills, pleased people, contradictions, cultures, cars, noise and bedlam, know it with Hotelbye since Bangkok is complete with good stuff. Among the points you will see in Bangkok is Wat Phra Kaew or the Temple of the Emerald Buddha. Wat Phra Kaew is the most crucial Buddhist Temple in Thailand and is located in the historic middle of Bangkok, within the grounds of the Grand Palace. The Temple of Emerald Buddha is beautifully decorated and includes a good sense of peace about any of it and makes Bangkok an area worth visiting.

Sounds like you are on the "back-packer" type of budget? Try Khao Sarn Road area. Lots of cheap accommodation there and you can organise tours from where you are staying as there will (nearly) always be a tour operator at evry hotel.
But generally - there are lots of cheap accommodation everywhere. And once you are in Bangkok, getting around is not a problem.
Plenty of website for you to search from but the one I have used and found very reliable was http://www.sawadee.com
It lists a lot of hotel and the price as well as pretty unbiased reviews by travellers.

I stayed in a hotel (some years ago, admittedly) called the Indra Regent in Bangkok. By western standards, it was very good value for money, and had an upmarket feel.

Bear in mind that was about ten years ago, but I'd investigate it anyway.
