Busy crowded. Though the waters of the Chao Phraya are heavily polluted. Thailand had some heavy rains recently and that may have flushed some of it but, keep in mind that though Bangkok maybe a modern city, outside of Bangkok is rural areas and they don't practice sanitation like the western world. It's still about 50 years behind.

Personally, I would only appreciate it from afar right now. Thailand is taking steps, very small ones to clean it up.

Go near but not in unless you have had all your shots.

Check out the odors when you pass some of the small Klongs, riverlets that criss cross the city. It's not good. I love Bangkok and Thailand but there is a reality to the situation.

If you are talking about hotel scene, then all 5 stars hotels are located by the river... From Oriental, Peninsula, Hilton, Sheraton, Shangri-la etc... Highly recommended if you want to stay in somewhere romantic and lovely view at night time and away from drunken tourist scene around Sukhumvit...

If you are talking about purchasing some property by the river then its worth your invest because the price of place by the river has grown up alot every year... Its considered the area for rich people to locate...

Altho the river is not so nice but who is going to swim there by the way? There are so many beautiful attractions of old temples and important places by the river of Bangkok... Its very nice and romantic at night time really!

Smelly and polluted. It is hard to believe that people live next to it. On a boat trip, I saw children swimming in it. Not nice.

Put it this way, you wouldn't want to go swimming in it.
