Christians are scolded for being bigoted, racist, elitist, etc, for such things as not allowing practicing gays to be members of a church. I think this is a perfect example of hypocrisy Here's why. Would an atheist be ok with a fundamental Christian teaching their children's science class in a state that permited the discussion of intelligent design? No. According to the atheist, that teacher is filling your childs head with thing that are incorrect and harmful. They only want their kids to associate with people who believe what they believe. If we are elitist, the liberals are far more because their exclusivity occurs not just in a few churches but in every single educational institution in the country. Educators with different views are not currently allowed into the "fellowship" of teachers. Even if they are, they are not permitted to speak of their views. My point is simply that not even liberals can really be tolerant. Tolerance is an unworkable ideal. What do you think?

There is a difference between tolerance and acceptance.

You hit the nail on the head. The biggest advocates of tolerance are sometimes the most intolerant among us. I was just speaking to a friend of mine lst night who is a teacher. She is facing a difficult situation at work, but can't say anything because her opinion is against what is "acceptable and she is a year shy of her tenure.

They would not"tolerate" her if she spoke her mind, so she must remain silent. Sounds like something out of the former USSR. Hmmmmm is socialism alive and well in the US. The soviets had political correctness down to a science.

I personally hate the way we use "tolerance." I don't want to be tolerated, the way a person tolerates the yapping dog of a neighbor. I want to be respected.

Now, I'm a liberal person, and I think I'm quite "tolerant" in my everyday life. However, that doesn't mean that anything goes. My future children shouldn't learn about mythology in science classes; they can learn about all different kinds of creation myths in literature or social studies. They are going to hear all about Jesus and YHWH from my mother. They shouldn't be taught that in science! That isn't elitism, but the necessary protection of children's education.

Now, as far as Christian churches being opposed to homosexuality--I have no problem with that, honestly. I have a problem with the attempts to make that religion's morality law, and I have a personal problem with people like the Westboro creeps. Again, that isn't elitism, but the necessary protection of our rights.

Believe whatever you want, just don't cram it down other people's throats. I don't do it to you.

Good post. Tolerance should be strived for even if you think it's unworkable. It gives you a goal within yourself and without to at least stay on the side of harmony.

Stop picking on the Christians. They feel the way they do because they have been told that God is a judgmental punishing Jerk. Just because they have been mislead into believing this nonsense is no reason to be making fun of them. Remember most of them were told this as little children when they were to young to be able to look at this from a logical basis and see it for the nonsense that it is.

We need to do what we can to make them realize that God loves each and every one of us or we would not be here.

You can’t help them by being nasty and making fun of what they believe in. The best we can do is try to lead them to the truth by example. If they see us responding lovingly to situations where they have been trained to attack or be defensive, hopefully they will notice and start to understand the True meaning of the message Jesus left for us.

Rather than the judgmental message their religion teaches.

We need to remember what Jesus said. Judge not, love our enemies, Turn the other cheek, and love our neighbors as our selves. Remember Christians are our neighbors too. We need to love them as Brother Jesus asks us to do.

Love and blessings Don

I've noticed that people are a lot more tolerant when the subject doesn't effect them personally.

It's easy to talk the talk, but when push comes to shove it's harder to let the radical muslim teach the kindergarten class.

I disagree. No atheists i know have argued that religion cannot be taught at all, but it is NOT an aspect of science. We already have ethics and religion classes for people who wish to learn about religion.

Tolerance is another word for acceptance. I don't accept unChristian actions so there are a lot of things I don't tolerate.
