I've been wanting a lab for a long time now and I think I can get one finally!
I've got two kids, work school hours and have the space for a dog. I can take it for a brisk 15 minute walk in the morning and a longer walker and a run around in the evening.
I don't intend getting a puppy, but a dog which I have seen in a rescue center.
Do you think the lab will suit my family's lifestyle?

Sorry about that, my kids are 12 and 5. And the dog which I may adopt is good with kids and is house trained and knows a few commands.

A lot depends on the age of your kids and the temperament of the dog. Getting an adult dog may be great, if it has been well-socialized, but labs can be quite large, and though not generally aggressive, can be quite boisterous. I think the dog may need more than two walks a day also, they need to be able to run, and love water. Ask the shelter about the dog, and take your kids in to see how the dog reacts to them. There may be a a rescue dog association in your neighbourhood which also can help. Best of luck and congratulations on saving an animal in need!

If you work school hours, You might want to get somebody to come in every few hours to check in on it and take it out to the bathroom and give it water. But everything else, you are perfect for a lab. Just make sure the dog doesn't like to chew things becasue Labs tend to eat everything in their paths. Introduce everything to it, let it sniff your stuff, and if the dog starts to nibble, discipline it and do this over and over so it will learn Hey- thats not mine so i wont eat it. lol or something like that. Have a good time with the dog and make sure you play with it. The reason I know all of this is because I have a labradoodle (lab and poodle) and She is WAY more of a lab. Good Luck!

Sounds like the perfect dog for you. You have planned it out and made sure that you will have time to devote to the dog. Labs are like Golden Retrievers they just wanna play but will be calm and can adjust to most lifestyles. They are a good dog for kids because they are not viscious and are actually really sweet. They love to swim too, so they are very versatile to different environments. Good luck with the new dog, Happy Thanksgiving.

labs are very intelligent, and physical animals, as long as you know what you're getting into, I'd say go for it. Labs will learn new commands and tricks if taught on a regular basis, they also need a lot of physical activity. Having young kids like you do, they could play fetch and other games with him. Just make sure you're constant with your diciplines when they have to occure and your family should have the perfect dog for them!

You have decided that you want to bring a dog into your life. You realize the commitment that you are making. You are willing to invest the time, energy, and money necessary to make this relationship work for you and your future dog. With those decisions behind you there are lots of questions left to answer. In choosing the type of dog you want, you need to consider your specific needs and lifestyle, the space you have, and your activity level. The breed, age, and sex of the dog will also be important factors in your decision.

What age are your children? Make sure to ask the shelter if he is good with kids too. Labs are wonderful dogs, the best in my opinion, but they do need lots of exercise to be happy. And you will have to keep him in the house, they are NOT outside dogs. Let me know if you have any questions.

I have a chocolate lab. I got him when he was a puppy and he is great, but demands TONS of attention all the time, so your kids will be great entertainment for him! :)
Enjoy!! And thank you for rescuing a pet from the pound!!
