and think about OTHERS for a change?

While some loser is WHINING about his or her insignificant problems, children in third-world countries are starving. Do these WHINERS realize how stupid they look when others have it much worse than them? Jesus Christ, some people have a lot of growing up to do. The world isn't fair, losers, so put an end to your pity party already because nobody cares. We have our own "problems" to attend to, but you don't hear US whining about them, do you?

People shouldn't let their petty problems get to them. Remember, LIFE IS WHAT YOU MAKE IT! So if you're depressed, I have NO sympathy because it's your OWN DAMN FAULT!

Registered Nurse here; Depression is a disease, like, cancer, diabetes, leukemia, etc. It can and does have devastating effects on people. Furthermore, your comments could cause additional depression to some fragile individuals, even to the point of suicide. Therefore I ask if you can't be supportive at least keep your mouth shut and opinions to yourself.

All I ask is that you please read the entire answer. Your question leads me to feel that if the first few words do not go your way, you will disregard the rest of the answer. :-(

I am on medication for depression, which is considered an illness. (See link) Many people, including my father, seem to have the same opinion as you. If I could get rid of the depression, I would. It is not a happy life to wake up each day, wonder "why am I still here," and feel my life is hopeless. (This is when I am off meds.) This feeling is also one step away from suicide. (No, I am not contemplating suicide, although 20 yrs ago I put a gun to my temple and did not pull the trigger.)

YOU CAN HELP ME AND OTHERS LIKE ME by just listening and not judging. Sometimes all I need is a sounding board.

"WHAT IS A DEPRESSIVE DISORDER?
A depressive disorder is an illness that involves the body, mood, and thoughts. It affects the way a person eats and sleeps, the way one feels about oneself, and the way one thinks about things. A depressive disorder is not the same as a passing blue mood. IT IS NOT A SIGN OF PERSONAL WEAKNESS OR A CONDITION THAT CAN BE WILLED AWAY. PEOPLE WITH A DEPRESSIVE ILLNESS CANNOT MERELY 'PULL THEMSELVES TOGETHER' AND GET BETTER." (emphasis from responder)

I know this is not what you wanted to read. By the way, I am a 54 year old mother/grandmother. If you were my friend, I would be your sounding board when you needed one. Friends accept friends for who they are. Think about it.

This is very insensitive. I have been battling depression since I was 12 years old. It was brought on because my biological "father" is a convicted child molester. This is not insignificant nor is it "my fault". Depression is a chemical imbalance, usually brought on by severe trauma, and the people who suffer from it have no control what so ever regarding how it affects them. Treatment is very ineffective in a lot of cases and is extremely damaging to your system anytime someone requires the long term use of drugs. None of this means that people with depression do not care about suffering in the world. On the contrary these issues often contribute to the downward spiral that we face. We feel it so much that it shuts us down.

I would assume that you posted this question because someone in some area of your life is suffering. Rather it's family, a co-worker, or a neighbor; I hope that you will do some research on the subject. Find out how it really affects the people who suffer from it. It can be just as difficult for someone to see someone they care about suffer as it can for the person themselves. If you work towards understanding this disease it will ease your frustration.

Oh my, what set you to fretting this morning?

Yes, sometimes it is a bit of a drain listening to people carry on about their own troubles, and I have some sympathy. However, you should know that clinical depression is a physical illness. But I'm getting a sense that you are not talking about depression, you are addressing "whiners" in general. Again, I have some sympathy.

After you calm down a bit, maybe you can use the same compassion you have for people starving as for someone who is just having a bad day. Like I'm doing with you.

Peace.

You are whining right now...Depression is a serious illness that not only affects someone's emotions, but can make them physically ill. There are several causes for ddepression, and it can even be genetic. Sometimes just venting, or asking someone for help is the only way they can deal with it. Yes, there are people who have it worse than us, but no matter who you are, you can have things pretty rough. It is not for you to judge people. I have been depressed for a while, and am starting to come out of it, but it takes time. This doesn't mean that I think my problems are worse than someone else's, it just means that there is an imbalance in my brain that needs to be worked out. The whole time I was depressed I refused to admit it, and i would overconcentrate on other problems around the world. This was not healthy, because i couldn't get the help I needed, and I didnt' realize that my family was suffering because of my inability to admit i needed help. whether problems are real, or insignifigant is not for you to judge, because problems are different for different people.

When I was 11 and had my first taste of depression, I didn't ask for it to happen. Now that I'm older, I can tell myself the things you mentioned about children dying from starvation, or even the veterans coming home with limbs missing and so on. At the same time though, it is not your place to tell people they are not allowed to ask for advice. It's a physical problem with the brain and it's not some imaginary illness. Be glad you get to live such a charmed life.

First off I think we should be looking at our own streets before we start feeding those 3rd world countries. Kinda looks bad when you are feeding them and not your own people...IMO

No where do you get the right to tell someone who is depressed to get over it??! Have you ever been depressed? If you have you'd know that it takes so much out of you.

For me it eats at me everyday. I've suffered for most of my life and I feel like a I'm just a shell.

I'm so sorry for you. You must have a horrible life thinking about everything every day.

I'm sorry.

Fat load you care...
mind you I still help them I recall donating and such... have you done so? I juggle education, love problems, family problems all at the same time... I know that the people in 3rd world countries are suffering... but still you can just expect us to leave what we were born in to sacrifice that much? I bet 80% won't want to help 100%... at least 50% of help would do while still continuing with their lives...

btw people just want other people's OPINIONS on their problems (everybody has mixed emotions about sutff)... if you're only doing this for points then why are you posting stupid questions like this?

Are you talking about people with true depression? That is not an insignificant problem. Sure there are people starving in third world countries, but those people WITHOUT depression should worry about that, all people with depression should be concerned with is seeking help for their depression. When they are stable mentaly THEN they can worry about third world hunger problems. YOU are whining.

Depression hits even the strongest person, it's a real illlness just like Cancer or anything else, hopefully, you will never have to know the realness of the pain, but, I personally would like to see "Jesus Christ" come down and slap you with a hand of "depression" if even for a little while, and you'll be on your knee's praying at night for it to go away, and whining about it too, I promise you that.

It's pretty obvious that you don't care about depression so why did you visit this site? Depression is a chemical imbalance and people who have it can be a big help to one another! People don't need to feel worse by rude, insensitive remarks like you have made. It isn't as easy to pull yourself out of clinical depression as you may think. Get a heart!
