Well, it all depends on how you USE petfinder.org. The best way is to use it to narrow down what dogs are up for adoption in your area. You'll want to look closer to the time you can get a dog, since it changes so much as the dogs are adopted.

If you're set on getting a purebred, do NOT go to a pet store! Those are low-quality dogs that come from puppy mills. They often have bad health problems or behavior issues.

Don't pay a lot for a "designer" dog like a puggle or schnoodle. They're just fancy mutts. If you can find one for a good price (like under $100 for one who's had shots, spay/neuter), then get it, but know that you're not getting a pet that can be used in AKC agility or other competitions. This also goes for "teacup" varieties of dogs.

If you want a particular breed, do a search online. See if they have a rescue organization. Call/email the breed club and find a good breeder in your area. But you'll pay for bloodlines, believe me.

If you are looking for a dog. I suggest going to a local animal shelter or Humane Society.

When you go, walk through and be sure to look at all the dogs. Don't look at how pretty they are or how scroungy or dirty they look. Look at how they act, what they are doing, and how they are relating to you. Don't be put off by whining. :D They may not whine as much when you get them home.

Check on the history of the dog, if they have any. They may have a bad habit that you can't live with. For example, my sisters dog can not be around chickens. This is not a problem for us, but for some, it would be.

Puppies at a shelter are easy, you (or a child if you have one) sit at one end of the room and ask the worker to let the whole litter out of its cage. The first one to come to you is the one you take (the best dog our family ever had was gotten this way).

You may also want to consider asking the shelter which dogs are to be put down soon and look at them a little more than the others. They don't have much time left and deserve to have extra consideration.

If you take enough time in there you will have a dog catch your eye and it will be the one for you.

I hope this helps......

Go to your local shelter or call your local ASPCA which can be found by calling 411 or looking in your phonebook. They have young and old dogs, most have their shots already and are altered so you don't have to pay for those extras. Also many of them will probably get put down if not adopted and all they need is a good home. DO NOT GET A DOG FROM A PETSTORE..most of them come from puppymills and have many problems later in life. Every dog I have ever rescued has been from my local shelter and I have never had any real problems. Just remember dogs live a long time and its a big committment, so adopt wisely! If you don't think you can handle a 10-15yr committment or your parents can't, don't get a dog because its not fair to the dog.

I think you should start by narrowing your choices down a little. Decide if there are certain traits/aspects of a dog you prefer over others. For example, if you prefer medium sized dogs.. after that, go to the library, and do some reading. Most puppies can will melt your heart, so it's a good idea to read about a few breeds you find most attractive in terms of personality, breed quality, etc. After that, it's a matter of visiting a breeder, meeting the puppies, and finding a connection with that one special pup. Good luck! :)

PLEASE get a greyhound. They are the sweetest dogs god ever put on this earth. Rescue one from the track. Not enough greyhounds are resqued and they are killed. Besides, all your friends will think its awsom that you have a dof that runs 45mph. If your parents say you cant get one because they are hyper, that is such a lie. After your done walking them and playing with them, they lie down to go to sleep for the rest of the day. Take my word they are the perfect dog. Go to a greyhound racing trcak website and look for an adoptions section. THEY ARE SO PERFECT.

Obviously you're young and living at home? Then you need to get a dog that you can easily be responsible for without depending on your folks. Do you have time to walk a big dog daily? Would your parents be bothered by a barking dog? Do you have time to take your dog to puppy or dog classes to train it properly? How big is your house? How big is your yard? Try to figure out you LIFESTYLE and then start narrowing down to a breed. That's how we did my first dog (as an adult) and we've never been disappointed. But you have to get one that fits you and your family. Good luck.

Where are you? How far are you able to travel to get to a good breeder?

Maybe, if you looked at Breeders near to you then you could make a decision based on the options that are readily available.

It would be awful to set your heart on a particular breed only to discover that they are very rare & you've no chance of getting one.

Why buy a dog from a breeder when sooo many dogs are out there already needing homes? That's why people are sending you to petfinder to look at adoptable dogs that will melt your heart.

Check the local SPCA. They have a lot of perfectly adorable dogs who need homes, and I believe they will even help with shots and spaying or neutering.

Good luck!
