It was the Greeks that held actual Fighting Competitions compared to the Romans who loved when men fought with swords, spears and shields and fought to the death. The Greeks thought there was mor honor in fighting with just ones hands instead of weapontry and let the beaten one live in the hopes he could redeem himself in fighting again.
The Greeks did everything naked back in the day and yes Snap, fighting was one of them.

In time, the boxers began to fight while standing and wear gloves and wrappings on their arms below the elbows, although otherwise they were competed naked

Yes, in ancient roman and greek times at the games they fought nude. married women weren't allowed to go.
