Pick up a history book and you will find that we just quit. Lyndon Johnson, after the Tet offensive decided that we would not contribute anymore to this war effort. When he left office and Richard Nixon campaigned to end the war, it was close to the beginning of the end. Before Nixon began the withdrawal of troops in the seventies, he actually escalated the war with carpet bombings over Cambodia.
The US didn't win or lose the war in Vietnam. It had victory all but assured following Tet, but instead old Lyndon had had enough, and wouldn't give General Westmoreland the additional troops he needed to finish it.
By 1970, the Americans began turning over duties to the RAVN, and by 1975, the Americans completely withdrew from Vietnam.

Unfortunetly there is no real win in war, but I would say that Vietnam was a loss, not because we were beaten, but because we more or less gave up. We never went in with a clear cut strategic plan for victory. We had so many restrictions placed on our military in terms of where and when and how we could engage the enemy, and our goal for the war was so muttled, that our troops didn't know what they were supposed to do. I am not confused as to whether we should, or should not have been in Vietnam, I understand and believe that we should fight for democracy and freedom and also help others that want that right. But when we decide to do this, we should have a clear-cut plan mapped out from start to finnish. In my personal opinion, I feel the vets from the Vietnam war got the short end of the stick from our government for not giving them a definitive plan for victory and from the people of our nation that shunned them when they returnd home. That was a very dark period for our country, one that I hope does not get repeated.

The best answer here is:
"It depends on your point of view."
Technically we did not lose. Before we pulled out of Vietnam we had a peace treaty where N. Vietnam promised to leave S. Vietnam alone. So - using this as a metric - we did not lose.
However - several years after the peace treaty was signed N. Vietnam invaded and conquered S. Vietnam in a manner similar to Germany's conquest of Poland and France in WWII. As a result the South Vietnamese people were conquered and have lived under a totalitarian regime ever since.
The real losers were the S. Vietnamese people.

Your right, we did win 1812 against the Brits; and the Korean War is still technically active. Although many people will tell you we lost Nam, we didnt.
Just like in Iraq, if wanted a war; wed have one. In less than a couple weeks we could demolish and just roll over the entire country like countries did in the World Wars. But thats not the goal, we're trying to protect the Iraqis, like we were trying to protect South Nam. If we wanted to, everyone knows we could have just bombed N Nam literally to the stone age and killed every last communist up there; but we didnt. We werent even technically in a war, Congress has to declare WAR; it was a police action. How can you loose a war that never happened?
And another thing about it, N Nam signed a peace treaty saying the war was off, the boundaries were set, we (America) left. After we left the S Korean econemy collapsed w/ lack of the American Bases. And after that, after we were GONE, N Nam took over S Korea.
We did not loose, but we didnt "win". It wasnt even a war on Americas part.

rather neither conflict would be won. the standard of prevailing ability you benefit something by utilising the victory. What did we make the main of the victory in barren area typhoon would I ask? we can't win a difficulty, the persons of those countries wherein we are struggling with for win back their freedoms suitable? And if I bear in mind properly while the conflict in Vietnam became what you prefer to call "misplaced" became it no longer a Republican in the white residing house on the time...hmm exciting. we could additionally look on the wars we've won in the final century....all Democrats, back exciting. what's your factor right here or is this in effortless terms a stupid troll fact to make you experience greater proper approximately helping Bush?

How can you win or lose in a non existent War. We never declared War on Vietnam. The Vietnam "Conflict" was brought on by Politicians, run by Bureaucrats who sacrificed the troops. It was
a loss, no one won in the long run. History will deal harshly with this so called "Conflict" Vietnam. We need to remember the fallen Hero's who fought bravely in Vietnam, while our President is sitting with
leaders of Vietnam in 2006 under the image of Ho Chi Ming. He himself never served there and to visit there Is like spitting on the graves of our troops who bravely fought and died there. Shame!

We never declared war in Vietnam. The premise of the question isn't valid.
What about WWI and WWII? What about the first Gulf War? What about the Civil War? What about the Spanish American War?
You need a big history book.

Did you forget Iraq? We wasted our time in Vietnam. We lost lives and we lost the war. Ho Chi min came to see Truman with his idea to organize Vietnam with a constitution based on ours. Trumann saw him as unimportant and never bothered to meet with him. He needed funding to stabilize the country. He then went to Eisenhower who never bothered to meet with him. So he went to China for his funding. That was the beginning of a communist Vietnam. Had these short sited white men taken the time to have a global view they would have reigned in Ho Chi Min and had a democratic government. But they never knew him or listened . Instead Ho went with his financial backers. We backed Diem Thu who we later assassinated. Vietnam became a quagmire of American brute force and ignorance. Never understanding the culture or the people we went in trying to push a democracy to people who just needed to eat. Starving people do not care about voting they want food. then medical and help rebuilding there lives. Democracy is a rare concept in human history. Most people just want to be led. In the end now we see Vietnam has found it's own way.
Why do you ask are you planning a Holiday in Cambodia?

Heavy loss, worse still troops went home to dogs abuse from people who have no idea what they went through. They fought an ideology, this is something which is very difficult to defeat and lessons are still being learned to this day in the middle east!
