If he is in preschool...buy him a PS2. He's not going to be aware of the difference. Those are about $150 or less.

Get him a PS2 right now there are more games for that than there are for the PS3 not to mention that most are already sold out.
Be honest with him and explain and let him know how proud of him you are and tell him if he continues to get these grades that when the price comes down for a PS3 you'll buy it for him.
I used the same ploy with one of my kids, on the condition that if his grades fell below a C the game is taken away until he raises that grade. We only had to do that once! He just needed an incentive to do what we knew he could all along.

That really is tough! Especially if he's old enough to know the difference between a ps2 and a ps3. I always end up kicking myself when I promise my daughter something that I can't keep! But, try e-bay. Those systems are hot right now, (my little brother wants one for christmas and my mom is going insane!). I havent looked around on there for them specifically, but I've seen some highly priced items that the seller is willing to settle for a payment plan. (where you pay monthly, obviously) And maybe you can even find one for cheaper, since it's all bids. Goodluck!

Wow. That's alot! Also there's only going to be 400,000 or so sold nationwide so you might not have time to wait for the price to get lower because they wil all be gone. I would just explain it to him, and ask him if he wants something else. You should buy him the Nintendo DS, or the PSP or the new color ipod. They are awesome. They are cheaper AND you can take them anywhere!!!! You can't do that with the Playstation 3. =D So if he's younger than 11, he'll probably undersand and pick something else......if he's not....good luck to you!

You are well aware of the correct answer. The only option you have is ; was he promised the upcoming PS3 if so the only right thing to do is keep your word. Say what you mean, Mean what you say , and Always follow through! now if he doesn't have a PS2 he might possibly accept,....who are we trying to kid? Do the right thing and save the child another adult that didn't follow through on their word !!

A PS3 for such a young child is ridiculous! I would advise either telling him the truth or opting for a cheaper gaming system, like a PS2 or even a PSP. His parents can always upgrade later.

unfortunately, I say you need to keep your end of the deal. You really should have done your homework on how much this would cost you OR something more reasonable. Learn from your mistake for the furture but this time, pay up for the PS3

Tell him the truth. Would you rather break your word or be in debt? Tell him you didn't realize it would cost so much. Go on eBay and show him that they are thousands of dollars right now. I think he will be disappointed but he will understand. I go through the same thing with my nephew, and now before I open my yap and promise him things...I think.
Good luck.

i'm a realist, so please don't be offended at my answer:
why would you promise something if you didn't want to do it in the first place? if he was already making straight A's, why did you doubt that he could continue to do so?
you made the deal, you need to follow through on your end, period, end of story, regardless of if you want to spend the money or not.
p.s. the kid's a genius....he really suckered you. lol
