You may have a blood-filled blister under your nail. I've had them many times from playing sports, from stopping quickly (basketball and floor hockey). Your nail may turn black-and-blue and fall off. Don't worry, it'll grow back.

Most likely cause is a fungal infection. If it is near the edge of the nail, you can treat this with repeated use of an over the counter anti-fungal. If it is deep in the nail bed, you need to go see a doctor and maybe get a script for an oral anti-fungal.

It could be pressure. Did you wear a bad shoe, or is your foot swollen for some reason? I had trouble with my feet one night and I was wearing dress shoes. I didn't even realize my feet were swollen but it made both big toenails turn black and also punched out the toenails into a wierd shape. I went to an osteopath who showed me what was wrong with my feet so the swelling went down, then the damaged toenails grew out after a few months.
If you tend to wear very high shoes, at least go toeless, like sandals.

It is probably an in-grown toe nail. That is a toe-nail that is growing under the real one. You should seek medical attention to get it taken out that way it doesn't come to infection.
