I want a medium to small dog that would be a great pet. I also want to train for agility but not all the time.

Why if they are not "purebred" are they labeled mutts and mongrels? What low self esteem these people must have to need a "purebred" dog to boost their ego. Mixed breed dogs can make wonderful pets. I breed purebred show dogs and have owned many mixed breeds. They are all great dogs.

If you want to do AKC agility (they aren't the only ones who do agility) you will need a dog that can be registered with the AKC---either a purebred or a rescue dog that looks enough like a particular breed to get an ILP. An ILP allows neutered dogs who appear purebred to compete in AKC sanctioned events except for conformation.
I suggest finding an agility club near you and seeing what kinds of dogs they have. You may meet a breeder you click with or discover a breed you otherwise would not have considered.
You can also find out what to look for to find a dog that is good at agility but doesn't need to be running ALL the time.
If you want to do agility now, look for an adult dog through a rescue group as you would have to wait more than a year to compete with a pup.

A Shiba Inu is quiet nice on agility, they are medium, friendly dogs, with a independant attitude, they love attention but only when they want it, they will snuggle and cuddle here and there, but they are fantastic at agility, thats what they are now used for today. And also in that same non-sporting group of agility dogs is the Finnish Spitz, it too is a relative of a Shiba Inu and is great at agility classes due to its great gaints in the show ring. I had a Shiba Inu and was very timid and nice in temper and am currently looking to buy a Finnish Spitz, they are very hard to find and expensive, so your best bet is to maybe lean more towards the Shiba Inu if your not looking to spend alot of money on a dog.

Puggle is not a breed.
You can't do agility at an AKC sanctioned event with a mongrel.

For agility training and for medium sized breed, I would say look into Border Collies.

A whipet, or a sheltie is good for agility. But I really love biscons. They're not too bad with agility either, and very susceptible to spoiling!

I just have to recommend Schnauzers! They're fabulous at agility, have a lot of energy but are very intelligent and quick to train if you are firm. Mine, I would describe him as "just as energetic as we want to be". If I want to walk, he's ready. If I want to curl on the couch, he wants to be at my feet or in my lap. He does test our limits sometimes, but mild correction does the trick. I think he just wants to see if the Rules are still the Rules.
He's about 20 lbs, so not the biggest of Standard Schnauzers, but good for me. I think he's got some Mini Schnauzer blood in him... oh well, he's a rescue and I'll love him no matter what.

If you want a nice, smart yet, hyper dog for agility you have to get a Border Collie. They are the BEST!!! Hard to handle as pups because they are so active. Never under estimate they are SMART!

An amercian staffordshire or an american pit bull terrier (bred to be to size of the breed standard) would be a medium dog with unlimited affection that will do anything you ask it to. My pit bull was the star pupil in his agility class (they really want to please their owner) and he's the best cuddler I've ever had!!

GET A BOXER!!!!! I have one and he loves agility, we were doing jumps and he loved it. Boxers are good sized and they love to do that agility stuff. But make sure you get a pure bred dog with papers or u cannot take it in most all contests. BOXERS RULE!!!!
