anytime you do not hit the ball in the center it's called english
in combination with strenght and speed and soft shots you can decide where you want the cue ball to go after you make the shot this is called cue ball control by hitting it in differnt spots with differnt force you can have a big advantage over the other player by making it do what you want it to do

In Yahoo Pool, the english ball puts spin on the cueball.
If you move the indicator to the top, you will have a much better break, as the cue ball will bulldoze its way through the rack and scatter them nicely. If you move the indicator to the bottom, the cue ball will strike the ball you are aiming at, and spin backwards.
Keep in mind that full power is only needed on the break.
The most common mistake on yahoo pool is hitting the ball too hard.Make a practice table and watch how far the cue ball travels with the power at two.
Good Luck!

English is the applied spin that you can put on the cue ball. It is used to get poisition on the next ball after you make a shot.
English.......low , top, right, left, stop, which can also be used in combinations ex: low-right
ect.
