Actually I worked with a very cruel woman who was a minister in the the No Name Church. She justified mistreating those in her way as necessary in the world at this time. (I don't think it was their belief, I just think the wrong person in their religion was given some power.) I witnessed many manipulative cruel schemes in the work place to help her gain a position of power. I grew up in a fundamentalist hotbed of religion and thought I had seen and heard everything up to that point. People like Ted Haggard may do damage on a phenomenal scale, but I have never seen evil masked as Christianity as I did with this woman. It was truly a eye opening experience as I listened to how other members had to come to her for council and her advice . . . such as advising one man to divorce his wife. Part of her rationalization was the marriage ceremony was not printed in the Bible so it was a man-made contract not supported by the Church.

A sin is a sin to God. Lying is as bad as stealing. I believe the priests were trying to say that. Any time you don't follow God's word you are a bad example.

There are million kinds of sin, or way of sinning.
One is as you mentioned "bad witnessing"...i.e...you are a Christian but your ways of living are un-Christian way (that`s a thousands way of sinning...so, really great sinning)
...and many more ways of sinning.
We`ll just summarize in this way: You sin in thoughts, words and in deed (actions). If you choose evilness other than godliness every seconds of your life...you are accumulating tons of sin which weigh you down to hell...and that`s sinning.
One example: you buy food, and the sales clerk are idiot, they give you change that is more than you should have, if you don`t give it back to that poor idiot, then you are adding sins to your account until it pulls you down to hell.
Sinning is that simple, you`re used to it in daily lives, that you may not noticed it you have sinned many times in a day.

While being a bad example is serious, I wonder if it does not minimize the seriousness of other sins, such as child molesting. What I mean is: do they refer to the child molesting as being "a bad example"? If so, then they need to revise their values and consciences.
