During a discussion among the club's membership board at St. Andrews in 1858, one of the members pointed out that it takes exactly 18 shots to polish off a fifth of Scotch. By limiting himself to only one shot of Scotch per hole, the Scot figured a round of golf was finished when the Scotch ran out.

Have u ever tried walking and playing 24 holes of golf with a decent result? In Australia we have some courses that have 27+ 36 holes per golf clubs which equates to nearly at least 12kms.The reason for the maxium of 18 holes is weather can turn really bad and play can be suspended and exhaustion can make it physically imposable 4 some players to play that far...18 holes is just a nice average.

a simple formula: there are normally 4 players in a flight, each one will be in charge of at most 4 holes, at least one par-3, par-4 and par-5. that leaves 2 holes unattended which are called free-for-all holes. the 16 holes attended and the remaining 2 unattended make it 18 holes. hell guys, i have no idea what i'm talking about, but if i were to play more than 18 holes i will be really exhausted. just thank god they made it only 18 holes and not 20 or 24..

According to the History Of Golf page on www.thegolfchannel.com:

St. Andrews eventually became the traditional center of all golf,... and in 1764, when the St. Andrews course finally settled on 18 holes (down from its previous 22), 18 became the accepted number for all golf courses.

huh..... i guess there are 14 clubs or sticks and 4 spare clubs or sticks. so if you keep 1 stick for 1 hole then you will need 18 holes to use them all if you use 1 stick for 1 hole.......
