I've seen some guys, mainly black guys who have never been in the military wearing dog tags made out of silver(or fake silver), why don't they join if they wanna do stuff like that?

Some may be hoping to go out in a blaze of glory leaving an essence of themselves in the blob of silver left on the ground.

Gold dog tags are for pooches.

Why do the military wear dog tags if they aren't dogs?

Many people wear "dog tags" because they are trendy right now. I don't know why, I think they are ugly.

We had dog tags made for our children when they went to summer camp, as the military knows, they are a sturdy form of ID.

I wear one that has my fiance's picture engraved and he has one of me that he wears with his issued tags. He's the one who actually had them made before he went over to Iraq. I wear it in support of him. I know the dog tags have somewhat of a gruesome main purpose, but i never thought it to be disrespectful.

Some of the Anti-War people over the years, started feeling less than men, when they grew up.
Some impersonate military veterans, so as to feel like men.
Several Democrat Congressmen who bragged about their Vietnam Service, have been caught and disgraced.

So often, military paraphernalia turns into a fashion statement, and before you know it, every light weight out there is wearing it.
If you don't own a set of designer cammies, or a peacoat, or a USMC t-shirt, or FBI cap, you're not in the in-crowd!

I can't answer intelligently on the thought processes of others. I wear mine because I'm in a warzone and I have to.

They might be wearing the dog tags because a relative
might be serving in the Armed Forces and they are honoring their service to the USA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

They may be medical alert tags. With their blood type, allergies health conditions ext. My mother has been waring my dads since he died, they might be a tribute to a fallen relative.

I don't know cause it is not exactly 'jewelry' It was made to identify the people who are killed on the battlefield......I have had too many soldiers lost in my family and friends to think it is 'cool'
