A whole hole is a hole, a half hole is still a whole hole, so save yourself a whole lot of worry and except that, a hole is a whole hole whether it is half a hole or a whole hole. Hope this is a whole answer and not half a whole answer.

If we are to assume that the "half hole" is the first part of the "entire hole", then it would probably take a lot less than half a day because he doesn't have to throw the dirt so far, plus he's not tired yet so he'll probably work harder and faster.

Assuming a full hole is a cubic yard of empty space, it would take half a day to dig out half that amount of volume.
