A THERMOSTAT IS DIFFERENT TO A WAXSTAT. The waxstat lives on the carburettor and controls the auto choke depending on engine temp. When the waxstat goes you can't fix it, it can only be replaced.

in all my 30 years in the auto industry, i have never seen a
servicable thermostat, it is a sealed component and can`t
be disasembled. just replace the old one and make sure that
your coolant is clean or flush the system when you service the
thermostat.
