Hey racvernaq...,

Poetrygirl is right! the best place to get a Marriage certificate is the local town/city. You can also get one from the State, which will be much more expensive. See the vital records site below.

If you have her obituary or death certificate that should also give her maiden name. You can get the death certificate from the same viatal record site. The obit, you can get from the library that saves copies of the paper in the town or city where she died.

If you are not in the US, search Yahoo for "VITAL RECORDS " .

Depending on how old she was, it might also be on her SSN application. If your library has a subscription to Heritage Quest Census images, look her and your GG Grandfather up. Once in a while you find a father-in-law or brother-in-law or young, single sister-in-law living with the family; their last name will be the maiden name. Sister-in-laws are tricky, since they sometimes lied about their marital status. Mothers-in-law sometimes had husbands in between. (That is, your GGGM is Mary Smith. Her Mother, Mrs. John Smith, marries Ebeneezer Haddock after John dies. Ebenezer dies, and your GG gP's have "Elizabeth Haddock, mother-in-law" living with them in 1880.

As an example of a false name with a sister-in-law, your GGGM's sister, Hanna Smith, hooks up with Robert Rascal, who deserts her. Hanna's child by him dies. She gets recorded as Hanna Rascal, single.

If you know where they were married and the date you can obtain their marriage certificate from the registry office in the town/city they were married.
