I'm a french student, who is going to NYC in january to study in St johns University. I would like to know if you have any advices to give me in order to find a not to expesinve apartment within Manhanttan.

you're better off living on campus. you could try finding a roomate service, but it's still going to be expensive. You could also live outside of nyc in port chester, croton, fordham or some other places and take the train in everyday. But "a cheap aparment in manhattan" is a paradox

Yes, ask the school. Stay in a dorm. The apartments here range from 800-4000 monthly. And it really is a closet. I was in real estate and was amazed by how much out of towners really wanted to live in Manhattan. It's not worth the money. If you really want you can try to live in the surrounding boroughs and take the train in. Make sure you find an apartment that is near a train station but not so near it that you can hear the train pass by every 15 minutes.

Check Village Voice paper. You will find many better deals outside of Manhattan. January is a good time to sign a lease. Look in Brooklyn or Queens also.

you must go to a real estate agent and then tell them how much you can pay per month [without the heat and gasand electric there bills are extra]and then they will show you arond the that have any space ,you can contact manhattan conncetions for example their and many agents to choose from you can look them up in yellow page book directory or amother way is you can maybe share a place
