I have trouble converting from US measures in baking to English. Also, what is a stick of butter? Is all purpose flour plain flour? And finally. what is the English equivalent of heavy cream?

I pound of butter is 16 oz. A stick (in the US) is a 1/4 pound so it weighs 4 oz. I use a scale that will weigh in lbs, oz., grams or k-grams. I went thru most of my recipes and weighed items (cup of flour) and added the weights on the side. Its much easier, faster and more accurate to weigh rather than use a measuring cup. All purpose flour is plain flour. I don't know the English equivalent of heavy cream but in the US it is whipping cream.

I know this has been answered already, but I had to clarify something.

Butter is sold by weight, where 1 lb = 16ozav (Avoirdupois)

A cup is ounces by volume, not weight, known as fluid ounces. IF it were water, then 1ozav=1floz. and they are the same.

Butter is .9 times the weight of water. So the real answer is one cup of butter is 7.2floz. But for most people 8floz butter is about 8ozav, or 2 sticks of butter.

This points out why the American system should eliminate oz, lb, inches and the like. Metric is based on 10's like our money, and is sooooo much easier.

In the US, a pound of butter is 16 ounces, or 454 grams. It is usually packaged as four sticks of 4 oz. each. So one stick is 1/2 cup, or 8 tablespoons. I would refer to all purpose flour as plain flour, as opposed to self rising. And I don't know what term Brits use for heavy cream.

2 sticks of margarine = 1 cup of margarine
16 tablespoons of margarine = 1 cup
all purpose flour is plain flour , it does not rise without help (salt, baking powder etc.) self rising flour you would not ad these things
1 c of unwhipped cream = 2. c . of whipped cream

It doesn't really have an exact measurement, it's just a ratio, as in, 2 cups of flour and 1 cup of water. Also, depending on the ingredient, the weight will be different. 1 cup of rice is going to have a very different weight to 1 cup of flour.
