How long do pet stores keep the " puppy mill " puppies ( until what age ? ) and what happens to them after they reach that age ?

I've never bought a dog; so far, all of my dogs have found their way to me before I've even had the chance to get to the shelter.

I was just curious, because if for obvious reasons we shouldn't buy puppies from pets stores ... won't they just end up in the very same shelters we then go to ?

I posted the question just out of curiosity. So far in my life, I've been blessed with having 4 dogs. Not a single one was bought; they were all rescues which crossed my path. Like I said on top, I never got a chance to get to a shelter ... it seems no sooner did I have the thought to go adopt, along would come a hungry, homeless mutt. Two of my beloveds have passed on. The two I am still blessed to have were both severe abuse cases. No offense to all of the reputable breeders out there, but I just can't see myself ever getting a dog other than by some sort of rescue ... be it either by chance or by going to a shelter.

Many sincere thanks to all who answered ... many of you confirmed my fears and suspicions.

If you go ahead and purchase a puppy from these places, then the puppy mill breeders profit. Since they profit they breed more puppies. The answer is not to buy from these people because that only encourages the cycle.

Even if you are getting the exact same puppy from the shelter that you would have gotten if you had paid the store for, you are still striking at the irresponsible puppy millers and back-yard breeders. If there is no money in it they will not do it.

They do not go to animal shelters. They most like are returned to the owner. For a life of misery in a puppy mill. Ask the pet shop owner next time you visit.

I think that if they dont get sold at a certain age the price goes down. Then if they start to consume more than the pet store thinks they are gunna make they get rid of them. They could eithor dump them at a pound or whatever.

I DON'T KNOW. I WOULD LIKE TO FIND OUT THE ANSWER TOO. IF THEY PUT THEM DOWN THIS IS SOO SAD . THESE PUPPY MILL DOGS ARE USUALLY SICK AND THE CONDITIONS THESE PET STORIES KEEP THEM UNDER ARE CRUEL. THEY SHOULD NOT BE ABLE TO SELL DOGS IN PET STORES.ITS BETTER TO GO TO A SHELTER OR FIND A REPUTABLE BREEDER.

VERY SAD!!!!!!!!!!

they kill them :(
they do that not only at pet stores but in shelters as well...
at some point they don't have space for other dogs so they kill the eldest ones that probably nobody will want and keep the younger ones that have more chances.... sad!!!

They suffer and die. Just go to an animal shelter to find your new dog or a very reputable breeder.

They are put down. If you want to buy a puppy, find a pet shop that uses good breeders, there are some who will not buy from puppiy mills. Find your own breeder and get one from them. Go to tthe pund and find one.

if they dont get sold, many places [[POUNDS]] put them to sleep.

the poor things, never had a chance...

and thats why if you want a dog you should go to a pound bc you are LITERALLY saving their life.
