I have tried a few things. From experience, I tell you, going on adkins diet, and staying on 'induction' throughout, was the fastest way I ever lost weight.
You don't have to buy the book. Rules are simple: No sugar, no sugar substitutes. No coffee. No caffeine. Count all carbohydrates, and keep daily intake below 20 carbohydrates daily. Drink at least 8 cups of water daily.
That having been said, atkins diet is said by some to be unhealthy. Healthy way to lose weight is to go on raw 100% vegan (vegetarian with absolutely no animal products) diet. On this diet you may have only water, fresh juices from raw vegetables fruit and greens, and raw vegetables, fruit, greens, nuts, and other plants and parts of plants in their raw, natural form. No refined sugar, no sugar substitutes. This is very healthy, and good for many ills. Many have testified that they lost lots of weight in a short time with this diet. Check this out:

Exercise and start calorie counting. Work out your BMR and try to eat about 500 calories a day less than this.
Running is one of the best ways to lose weight, cycling, swimming, rowing are also very good. If your not comfortable with these try dancing to your favorite music in your bedroom for an hour a day.
Don't try to lose it too quickly, 2 pounds a week maximum, or your skin will not have time to adjust.

You might think about trying this book called "The Movie Star Diet" by Steve Simmons. It helped me lose thirty pounds in 2 1/2 months when I didn't think anything would work. My goal to begin with was only 20 lbs! It has a really easy plan to follow and an excellent workout as well.

For each meal eat half the quantity that you usually eat. Go walk (or do any higher impact workout) for an hour in the morning and if you are usually an active sort of a person, try doing it again in the evening (for probably half that time depending on energy levels). Sleep well, stay well hydrated with water. Working out along with sensible eating makes you lose weight quickly and keep the weight off and you will be healthy. There are no healthier short cuts to losing weight. WORK OUT AND EAT SENSIBLY!

There are three main ways to lose weight quickly.

Don't target losing more than about 2 lbs per week. If you try to lose faster, your body will go into "starvation mode" and get very stingy about burning calories while at the same time very efficient about storing any calories that you do provide. And it will make you feel awful.
The most effective way to lose fat is aerobic exercise in the "moderate" fat-burning range, ideally first thing in the morning before you eat. When you wake your body is ready to burn fat and your levels of growth hormone are highest at that time. Later in the day it can take up to 30 minutes just to put your body into a fat-burning mode.
Another overlooked way to burn fat is by lifting weights. Skeletal muscle has very high caloric needs... almost twice that of adipose (fat) tissue. Put on a little muscle and you will burn calories all day even at rest. Be aware that skeletal muscle weighs more, so with this approach you may see your weight increasing while your body fat is melting away. Not realizing this often stresses folks who think they should be losing weight as a measure of fitness. Forget the scale, look in the mirror and you will be happy.
