A FEW DROPS OF WARM OLIVE OR BABY OIL DROPPED INTO THE EARS, GIVE THE DOG A RUB BELOW THE EARS TO "STIR IT UP" LET HIM GIVE HIS HEAD A GOOD SHAKE ( BEST DO THIS OUTSIDE!) AND THEN WIPE AROUND THE AREA OF EAR THAT YOU CAN SEE WITH COTTON WOOL. DO NOT POKE AROUND INSIDE THE EAR!!!
DO THIS ONCE OR TWICE A DAY FOR 5-7 DAYS.

Don't know if it is the same for dogs, but I do this with my cats. I rub behind their ears at the crease between the ear and the skull. This is just above part of the ear that is a bit hard - cartillage? - and I squeeze the ear and rub the insides of the ear gently together. This seems to clear the passageways a bit. The vet told me to do this regularly so that there would be no build up.
I guess you could also use a couple of drops of baby oil on the flesh of the ear (not dropped directly into the ear) which will trickle down and help loosen wax.
It should not be painful for the animal, in fact my cats love it.
Sorry if this is not much help but it's very hard to explain!!

You can get an ear cleaning solution from the vets office, should be around the waiting area some where and you don't need the vet to prescribe it to you. And use cotton balls. Q-tips are a bad idea, should the dog jerk for some reason, it could puncture the ear drum. You can twist the cotton ball around in their ears and make it form to the shape and even if they jerk it won't hurt them.
Follow the directions on the box or the bottle and you and your dog will be fine. I clean the dogs' ears once a week or whenever I peek in there and see the wax starting to build up. Some times it's every 7 days some times it's every 9, depends on how much time they're outside.

Use warm olive oil and clean with cotton wool wrapped round your finger. Don't poke inside; you'll just compact the wax and risk damaging the eardrum.
Or drops designed for dogs ears from the pet shop.
If it smells, or if it doesn't clear up after 2 weeks but comes back, or if theres blood or its very dark; then take your dog to the vet.
Don't use hydrogen peroxide, it is bleach. It will damage the ear canal and eardrum.

I doubt there would be any harm in dropping some olive oil in to gradually loosten the wax, itll take a week or so. Ears are designed to be self cleaning so the oil just helps loosten up the wax. Its also what the doctor suggested for my ears, oil is natural.

I have always found that a high pressure hose from the left ear to the right ear always clears the wax I'm now on my 304th dog in 23 1/2 years

Why wont you take him to the vets it's the proper way to get things cured.I'm sure you would take a trip to the docs if it was your own ears.Don't be so mean and get your dog proper help it could be in discomfort.

If you go to your vets you can buy a bottle of ear lotion. you don't need to see the vet to get it. if you feel comfortable enough to do it yourself. but i recommend having large cotton wool pads at hand because it can get messy. they don't feel comfortable having things in their ears and they shake.
tip for you - try to make sure lotion isn't to cold.
remember to rub the lotion into the ear, my vet told me to rub the ear canal until you hear it squelching. trust me your dog will let you know if you are doing it right. carefully rub canal and then put cotton wool over ear. then wipe out ear.
have fun
