DO NOT ANSWER IF YOU DO NOT KNOW ABOUT BUDDHISM

********************************************

The message of love given by Christ doesn't seem to be a new discovery - it has already been taught more profoundly by the Buddha five hundred years before Jesus. It seems the Buddhists even have a word for this unconditional loving-compassion - called 'mettha' in Pali language.

Has anyone tried the loving kindness meditation in Buddhism? What were the results?

After doing my normal anapana meditation I start to think of a person or several persons whom I hate most. Having those people in mind I start to think in a compassionate manner "may he be healthy, may he be happy, may he go up in life, may he live long". I keep on doing this for about 10 minutes a day. Now I find hat I do not get angry even when I have to get angry. (This is called Metha Meditation also.)

When I have to visit a new place I do the metha meditation that morning thinking of the people in there. I found that I get a very pleasant reception when I go there.

I get this same result when I have a problem with my boss. I do the metha meditation next morning thinking of my boss and when I go to work the reception is very good.

It's called "the loving-kindness" meditation in english. I do this meditation all the times and for several years on many people. Effects are stunning. People actually change their attitude to that of love and happiness. It also empowers me as well. This is the best technique to change your environment and to change yourself. You'll feel strong and happy. Others can feel the happiness energy emminating from you and they will in turn feel the same way. But understand that it'll not work on some people because they don't like to see happiness in others. But in the most part, you'll affect everyone around in a positive way. Try to practice it every morning and night or many times a day if you can. Remember to do it faithfuly every day.

In my studies it has often occurred to me that Jesus was teaching the Buddhas message. The only reason it is not more obvious is because it is tangled up in the conflicting message that the bible gives us.

The bibles conflictingly love you enemy's/eye for and eye message makes the actual message of love that Jesus left for us seem confused. Much of it's impact is lost due to being mixed in with the judgmental old testament stories.

It's too bad that the old testament nonsense was included in the bible. It seems to draw a lot more attention from followers that Jesus actual message of love and non judgment.

All Prophets before and after Buddha taught about love, because God is the eternal Love.
The core of this matter is not Who taught it first, but it is who understand and practice it correctly from eternity to eternity.

"For hate is never conquered by hate. Hate is conquered by love.
This is an eternal law. Many do not realize that we must all come to an end here; but those who do realize this, end their quarrels at once."
(Buddhist, Dhammapada - Sayings of the Buddha 2 (tr. J. Richards)

"Show forbearance and benevolence and love to one another. Should any one among you be incapable of grasping a certain truth, or be striving to comprehend it, show forth, when conversing with him, a spirit of extreme kindliness and good-will. Help him to see and recognize the truth, without esteeming yourself to be, in the least, superior to him, or to be possessed of greater endowments."
(Baha'u'llah, Gleanings from the Writings of Baha'u'llah, p. 8)

"13:34 A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another."
(King James Bible, John)

"Better to live on beggar's bread
With those we love alive,
Than taste their blood in rich feasts spread,
And guiltily survive!"
(Hindu, Bhagavad Gita (Edwin Arnold tr)

"Ye shall never attain to goodness till ye give alms of that which ye love; and whatever ye give, of a truth God knoweth."
(The Qur'an (Rodwell tr), Sura 3 - The Family of Imran)

12. 'And so thou, O youth of good thoughts, good words, and good deeds, of good religion! didst love me for that greatness, goodness, fairness, sweet scentedness, victorious strength, and freedom from sorrow, in which I appear to thee.
(The Zend-Avesta, Avesta Fragments)

I have tried it and I see that in order to truly understand and embrace love and other virtues, you must meditate every day.

Your question assumes that Siddhattha Gautama, just like Jesus of Nazareth where these great, wonderful, compassionate beings.

Both of them and more deserted all of us and left us to our own struggles!
