"The United States will join a visa system that will give business executives from members of the Asia- Pacific Economic Cooperation group easier access to the world's largest economy.

Holders of the APEC business travel card get multiple visa-free entry to other APEC economies and express passage through airport formalities. Of APEC's 21 members, only Canada, Mexico, the U.S. and Russia do not recognize the card.

APEC members include Indonesia, the world's most populous Muslim nation, where several deadly terrorist bombings have occurred in the past four years. The U.S. has toughened its airport procedures and visa rules since the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. "

So, security doesn't matter if you have money?

What do you think about this back door aproach?

scfd foreign governments, and some of them specifically on the APEC list, do not have the security protections we do in authorizing visas. It is a hole in our national security, in my view.

Just so you know, the APEC countries involved are: The 21 APEC members are Australia, Brunei, Canada, Chile, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Peru, the Philippines, Russia, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, the U.S. and Vietnam.

It adopts a foreign issued designation as a blanket entry authorization, is my concern. I think I am not explaining it well. We don't think other countries are as secure in issuing their travel docs. Yet here we are saying if someplace in Indonesia (I single them out because Bloomberg does) says 'he's an executive' we automatically give him a visa. I think we, not Indonesia, should make that case by case determination.

I don't know where I stand at this time of the challenge and controversy on this matter.
I am a little confused about it all. You received some nice answers (more confusion for me). I will have to just watch and see if this is a good thing or not. I can't say I don't feel a little unsettled about it-I do. Not sure if this is the best way. We all need to be cautious -the world has many dangers. I always prefer the safest approach for everyone. I think that is best.

I don't put my trust in people just because they are successful or because of the fact they have money--nor should anyone else.

Nice post.

I seems a bit like the proposal to issue special travel ID for US citizens to allow them an express lane through security at airports. Under that plan, travelers would be positively identified (biometrics) and pre-screened. If this APEC ID operated the same, then I don't see this as a privilege of the "elite".

It actually plays into the foreign surveillance program well.

What are you talking about? The US does not recognize this card. So what is different. Why pick on Indonesia. You have already said they have been attacked by terrorist several times in 4 years. Do you mean because a country is being attacked by terrorist they can not come here to do business. If that is the case we will only be doing business with our self. Get real. You are a good liberal . you could think of something better to bash Bush with then this.

Okay do you not know his purpose behind it? Seriously if you're going to criticize something then you need to know all of it. Top business execs are not terrorists nor to they pose a threat to our nation. He's making this access available in hopes to bring more money into our country therefore increasing our economy and providing more jobs to americans. But hey you're right, I hate when Bush tries to strengthen our economy and get people jobs.

You're right and I understand that but typically those who are going to cause harm to our country are not top execs in companies. They are camel jocky towel heads they live in caves. Not running a multi-million dollar business.
