Ideally, I think you should go to the gym and do sports. The strength you gain from weight training will improve your sporting performance, especially if you play contact sports. The big difference between the gym and sports is injuries. If you use good technique and use gym equipment properly there is very little chance of injury. Injuries in sport however are unavoidable, and occur frequently. The chances of needing surgery to correct sports related injuries are also pretty high.

If your thinking of joining a gym, take a tour around a few before you sign up. Pick the one that you feel most comfortable in, and pick one that has plenty of cardio machines, weight machines and free weights. Free weights are particularly important as they provide variety as there are hundreds of different exercises that can be performed with them.

Gym Pros
- Increased strength and fitness. Regular exercise makes you feel fit and full of energy, it realy does put a spring into your stride.
- Builds confidence. After a few months of training your body will begin to change, you will gain muscle and your bodyfat will have reduced.
- Socialising. Gyms are a great places to socialise and meet new friends.
- Low risk. If you use gym equipment safety, and follow the correct technique there is very little chance of serious injury. Sports however are high risk and injuries occur frequently.

Gym Cons
-Tough for beginners. When you first start lifting weights your muscles and tendons hurt like hell, this puts a lot of beginners off.
- Results are slow at first. Most beginners think that they will become well developed within 6 months. In reality it takes years to become heavily developed.
- Monotomy. It is easy to get stuck in a rut and become bored if you stick to the same routine for weeks on end. Once experienced you can design your own routines and change them frequently, but beginners are given fixed routines that soon become monotonous.
- Commitment. It is a lot easier to miss a gym session than it is to miss a pre-arranged sports session. Sports are played with other people and as such they are relying on you to turn up. Gym essions however are often done alone or with a friend, this requires more discipline.

Many Gyms have the added bonus of Spas, Steam Rooms and Saunas to relax in afterwards.
The staff are usually experts so can advise you as to how not to get an injury, whereas in sports like footy and rugby they are easily picked up and can put you out for weeks.

I think they compliment each other well, I work out at the Gym and relax afterwards in the facilities, but try to get down the local pool for at least 2 hours a week, usually when the kids are at school.

Martial Arts is a good sport to take up, coupled with regular gym excersise it should yield good results.

Hi

I was an athlete all growing up, playing different sports and same with playing sports in college. I think the gym and sports complement each other.

If you sport mostly works the lower section of your body then you would go to a gym to strengthen your upper section of your body. You want to be fit all over, not in just one area. You also want to keep the area that you are training thru sport conditioned. Because if you don't that is when injury sets in and that can set you back in competition.

I hope this helped.

Good luck!

Both can be fun...just bring your headset/walkman/ipod, etc! Friends also make both exciting.

If you like sports than do sports.. but usually you have to play for a team or be in a league in order to get the benefits.
I go to the gym its okay .. I am not a social person so I try to get my 30 minutes and leave. I tried gyms at home but unless you have a huge house they really do get in the way. If you got the collapsable type you forget to use it.. and if its out you can trip and break a leg and then you won't be using it at all :-\

I go to the gym at least three times a week to every other day in order to maintain weight training. It is a great stress reliever. I prefer independent sports. I hate people, so I hate playing sports. Although, I hate watching sports, too. But I am a chick so that's all socially acceptable.

I am a former national athlete, so I used to spend a lot of time on the track. and on the sports field....

The gym is quite satisfying in a way, as if you do it properly, you feel like you have achieved something when you leave.... and you feel good as it gets all those endorphins going...

i enjoy contact sports like kickboxing, and the sparring involved, as it really gets the adrenaline going.... chasing a ball around a muddy field also has it's merits...

both can be sociable...

I guess it depends entirely on personal preference....

I exercise everyday on my exercise bike at home. I'd never do it if I had to leave the house!

If you're easily bored, then I would take up a good strenuous sport, because exercise machine can be monotonous and get boring real quick!
