I'd been having some pain in the upper part of my stomach for a while. So I go see my doctor(I never go to the doctors). He pressed on my stomach and I about jumped off the table! He said "Your liver's enlarged! And you'd better quit drinking now!" With all the shock that had hit me I never asked him what that actually means?

I hate to state the obvious, but your liver is swollen, and therefore enlarged. The good news is that the liver is quite efficient at self repair. Follow docs orders, boring as they may be and you should be fine soon.

Take care.

If this is all the doctor did I would get a second opinion right now though. If this is all your telling us, come out with it, we can't help without knowing the full story.

I'm guessing you had a seizure or passed out and was taken to the hospital.
I'm also guessing your a heavy drinker and had a bout with the bottle.
I would say you'd better listen to the doctor Pal or they'll be taking up a collection for you for flowers soon, it's called sclerosis of the liver.
I've had three friends that killed themselves this way, heavy drinking and wouldn't listen to the doctor.
Whatever it is, do it now because it's as serious as it gets if he's right.

see, the liver is a very sensitive organ to outside chemicals, so often it's the first thing that gets damaged due to excessive alcohol abuse. The cells in the liver sustain damage and die from the exposure to alcohol in the bloodstream, which causes an immunal response. This means more blood pumps to your liver and sends clotting agents. The result is swelling and formation of scar tissue, both of which cause enlargement. It can lead to cirrhosis of the liver, which is basically excess scarring to the point that it ceases to function. The liver produces lots of chemicals that are essential to digestion and overall body function, so if your liver goes, you go. That's the thick and thin of it, in layman's terms.

Enlarged liver or hepatomegaly occurs due to various reasons. It could be because of drinking alcohol over a period of time. (10-15 years). OR it could be because of viral infections like Hepatitis B and C.

many other conditions like amoebic and bacterial infections of the liver can also cause the liver to enlarge. The best method of diagnosing a enlarged liver is by ultra sound scan of abdomen.

Follow your doctors advice to prevent further damage and even to correct your problem. It is not necessarily a serious condition but it can be if you don't follow his instructions. Better you have a follow up exam by an internal medicine specialist which is the most qualified professional in this field.
