I just like to help people or maybe make them laugh. It's almost what life's all about.

i agree there is too much point gaming going on instead of having fun.

At a resort club in France, a romantic Frenchman spots an American lady tourist entering the dining section. He swiftly rushes to her assistance, with his usual charm and his obviously attractive dialect, "Bonjour, madamoiselle." "Bonjour!" She answers back, "Can you........?" and before she could finish her sentence, the Frenchman interrupts to say, "Anysing, yes I can, for you. Ma cherrie." He takes her hand, kisses her palm, licks her fingers romantically and then continues saying, "Just as beautiful and sweet as you are, your fingers are. What is this tasty lotion you use, ma cherrie? And if I may ask, what is this you wanted to be assisted in?"

The lady (at that time very impressed) answered, "I've just been changing my baby's diaper's, he has been suffering from serious diarrhea. So, I just wanted to know where I could wash my hands."

A good question.
I have noticed a few people making no relevant comment in order to get their 2 points, in my humble opinion they don't deserve points for making no attempt to answer.
People could give a thumbs down to such answer if they like, but I don't know if this causes the person to lose a point, and I'm not sure if it should.
The only reason I would take the competitive element from it, is to encourage people only to answer questions they know something about, but I trust most people to be able to discriminate between helpful replies and meaningless ones.
Removing the competitive element would remove a lot of fun for some people. We do not need to use Q&A competitively, there is plenty of room for everyone with different motives, for asking, and answering the questions.
It is nice to get ones answers chosen as best, and the 10 points are a sort of reward, but they are only points, they have no value.
As the points have no real value, there is no point in removing the competitive element.

I don't really notice a 'competitive element' - I never check other people's levels or scores!

What yahoo does need to do is improve it's moderation service. Far too many people report abuse when all they really mean is that they personally do not agree with the sentiments expressed in a Q or A, and yahoo seems to blindly dish out violation penalties without ever checking to see if any rules have really been broken. That is frustrating!

not really but i think there should be some limits on violation notices
ie: you would have to be reported by at least 2 different YA users or if you are the type to report abuse you could only do it once per month per individual, This would stop some battles between people I think.

Yes! And I think they should moderate Q&A like most forums do. There is so much rubbish on here....
