They became the people we call Jews today. They are the people of Israel. aka Hebrews
The current Israelis were considered Gentiles in the Old Testament
At least that's how I understand it.

The Book of Acts chronicles much of the early church in Jerusalem. A couple decades after Christ died the Jews rose up against the Romans and lost severely and lost whatever sovereignty they used to have. They maintained some presence until Islam and Catholicism began warring, and they became even more scattered and persecuted. Some places were friendly to them, such as the Netherlands. Eventually, when the Protestants and Catholics began quarreling, the persecution of Jews lightened more and after World War Two England worked on granting independence to Israel, and since then Israel has been a secular government fighting to survive.

They went right on defying Rome until Rome clobbered 'em in 70AD, resulting in the final diaspora. Survivors were then scattered around the known world for nearly 2,000 years. Any history book will at least hint at the results: persecution, ghettos, pogroms, and holocaust.
Apparently it doesn't pay to ask the bad guys to do your dirty work for you as the Sanhedrin asked Pontius Pilate (ultimately, they had to blackmail him into it) to crucify the Lord.

The Apostles went on to evangelize Israel and Judah. Many people were converted. You can read about it in the Book of Acts.
Four decades or so later Jesus prophecy in Matthew 24:1-2 about The Temple being destroyed was fulfilled.
Israel has a bad history of rebellion against God. That is the source of all the judgments of God against them.
.
God used world empires to carry out the judgments (Egypt, Babylon, Assyria, Medio Persia,) and in fulfillment of The Temple destruction, Rome.
To know God personally and go to Heaven Jesus did the work for you to get there on the cross. YOU CANNOT EARN YOUR WAY IN. Your good outweighing the bad is lies from The Devil himself to send you to hell.
The work necessary to get you into Heaven is Romans 10:9-10.
:9 that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.
:10 For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
Pray to prayer to God.
Heavenly Father,
I am a sinner. I believe in my heart Jesus died and was resurrected for me. Please save me now. In Jesus Name, Amen.
If you meant business He heard you and saved you. Read The Bible to know Him better. The references above are from New King James Version.
