It's 1 am and he was outside my house when I got home. I live on a busy street so I called the number of animal control on his tag and they will get here when they please. I only have cat food so is it okay to feed him that as a one off? Also, is it okay to just leave him in a shed with water and a blankie if he has to stay the night? I'm a cat person, never dealt with dogs much.

i don't think cat food for ONE night would hurt. (although it's not good for them), a good thick blanket would be fine...make sure he has penty of water.

if it gets below 40 degrees outside, is there someplace inside that you could keep him?
inclosed garage? spare room? etc.

One of my dogs got out one time and I was immensely grateful that a person found her and kept her safe until I could get there. My judgment would be to secure the dog -- put him someplace where he can't get away and can't get hurt. Because what a heartbreak it would be to an owner to think you had found the dog and then for the dog to wander off again. Give him some water and maybe some food if you have it (not too much cat food, it's too high in protein and fat for a dog and might give them a bit of tummy upset if they have a sensitive tummy). But dogs don't need to eat as frequently as humans; most are fed way too often because their human companions feed them on a schedule humans prefer. If you don't have food he won't starve to death between now and morning. I agree don't turn him over to "Animal Control." If there's a vet number on the tag, call the vet. Notice if anyone posts a lost and found flyer on local telephone poles or in your local grocery store bulletin board. You could also put a small, homemade sign in your front yard. It's amazing how far even small dogs can travel. One time a small Yorkie type dog showed up at my house and it turned out he had traveled about 8 city blocks before he picked my house to land in.

You say it is warm there...so, why not leave him in the shed with water and a blanket? i would leave a door open so that he can get out if he needs to...he may just be a runaway and head home when he has enjoyed his little tour of the neighborhood...his owners might be heartbroken and looking for him...ask around with your neighbors and see if anyone knows of someone missing their dog...

i wouldn't feed him cat food, that is not supposed to be good for dogs...i guess once or twice probably wouldn't hurt him too much...but it's probably better to give him bread and milk, or scraps or leftovers you might have...

it's nice of you to want to help the little dog...instead of running him off...but if you can't keep him, or don't want to, is there an animal shelter or humane society nearby where you could drop him off?

Gold Bless that some one does care, even though you are a cat person you still took this dog in.
Yes, we fed a dog cat food once because of an emerg. I'm sure if you put him in a shelter with food, water and some blankets he would be ok. Hopefully he will find his home,
Hoped I helped!
Also, when we had a beagle come to our house when it was raining, I estimated he was about five, we made a loud noise and it scared him. So try not to make loud noises.

Animal control may have phone number or address of the owners. Your doing the right things. I once put a blanket in the dog house for my lab , cause it was cold. He pulled the blanket out. Hum! Maybe he doesn't like blanket, so I put some hay in there , thought that would keep him warm. Wrong! he pulled that out as well.

I know quite a few dogs who like cat food, but if not then lunch meat would do just fine. I think the shed should be fine as long as t's not to cold. Good Luck ^.^

The little dog can drink milk & can stay in the shed if temperature is not too low or too hot and has better ventilation. He will make noise in the night, keep light there.

yes to all of your questions unless its really cold out side. I'm sure you made a worried family very happy, a lot of people wouldn't take the time to call the number on the tag.

Bless you for caring. Yes, it won't hurt him to eat cat food. See if there is a vet number on his tag. That might help find his owners.

it's okay to leave him in the shed if it isn't freezing cold out and there is no where he can escape. You can feed him cat food that'll be fine.
