Hi have you considered a Diesel?? yes the engine's are a larger cc, but they are more economical to run, and often cheaper to insure, than a petrol model. Hope this helps GL :)

I've got a 1.4L but mine is year 2002.
You might be able to find 1.3L but you'd be looking at a much older model of Golf... and even then, the really older models more frequently had 1.6 upwards.

The smallest engine depends upon which Golf generation, and which market you are talking about.
In Europe:
The Golf I (1974 - 1984) came with 1.1, 1.3, 1.5, 1.6 and 1.8 petrol engines and a 1.6 diesel.
The Golf II (1984 - 1992) came with 1.3, 1.6 and 1.8 petrol engines, and a 1.6 diesel and turbodiesel.
The Golf III (1992 - 1998) came with 1.4, 1.8, 2.0 and 2.8 petrol engines and 1.9 diesel and turbodiesel engines.
The Golf IV (1998 - 2004) came with 1.4, 1.6, 1.8, 2.0, 2.8 and 3.2 petrol engines and 1.9 diesel and turbodiesel engines.
The Golf V (2004 - present) has so far been available with 1.4, 1.6, 2.0 and 3.2 petrol engines, and 1.9 and 2.0 turbodiesel engines.

You are right. The smallest you can get is a 1.4. they are pants though. Theres no mid range power and the chassis on the older models are prone to oversteer. Get a corsa or a honda civic instead.
