Yes of course you can.

We go chestnutting every year with the children and eat loads. They often have a residue from the shell which you need to get off as this can be a bit bitter to taste. The nuts themselves are yummy though.

Yes though not the same as roasted and do make sure you are eating Sweet Chestnuts and not conkers or you will not be feeling very well.

Yes i have had them raw when picked off the tree well knocked off then eaten.

of course they are really yummy, but they are hard to peel!
just make sure you dont get them mixed up with conkers which you can't eat!
