I would say a Doberman. I had one that I grew up with and he was known as the big friendly giant. He was adorable, little dogs in the park would bully him. But he had a beautiful rich and deep bark that scared people coming to the front door. He lived happily to 14.

I would personally choose a dog that looks like a Gaurd Dog. My dog, Zoey is a black lab. Though labs are gental dogs, at night they make excellent gaurd dogs. That way you'll have a frindley dog, but an excellent garud dog.
But if the lab is not for you, I'd go with the German Shepherd. Alot of people are afraid of German Shepherds, even though they are gental dogs.
Hoped I helped!

Personally I think any medium-large dog that truly loves you is the absolute best guard dog. They want to protect you because you are one of the pack. My boys are not purebreds my 6 year old is a border collie mix, and my 1 year old is a rottie mix. They aren't mean or vicious, but can become very protective if a stranger is around.

German Shepherd. I just adopted a beautiful apparently purebred from the local animal shelter- he weighs 85 lbs and this breed of dog is said to "have a conscience" and that they know good people from bad people. I have found this to be true. I live alone in a city apartment with 2 kitties and I can tell you, we are not going to find ourselves in ANY situation that this dog (Silas) won't be able to "handle"!

Hands down, without a doubt, the Caucasian Mountain Dog
is the very best guard dog of all the dog breeds

My choice would be a German Shepherd. They are very protective and seem to know who is good and who is not.
I have had several and all of them were great. I remember one who, when he would sit at the front door and look through the door, the UPS driver would not deliver. Kon was the sweetest dog ever but looked aggressive. Finally got the driver to meet him one day and after that, I got my stuff.

I would opt for a dog that LOOKS intimidating, rather than one that is necessarily vicious. You don't want to end up dealing with lawsuits from visitors, when the presence of a big mean-looking dog who (unbeknownst to would-be intruders) is a marshmallow inside will do the job just as well. I'd go for a great dane or a German shepherd.

Yep rotts. They are fun loving dogs who look intimidating and will protect the home with natural instincts but be gentle and caring to people they know are safe, people the family knows.
