Depends, Rottweilers have a natural guard instinct when it comes to the home and it's members and are very loving and affectionate dogs to those they know. Just about any dog can be trained to guard but rottweilers not only have the instinct but also the look most people fear. :)

There are a couple large dogs that would fall into this catagory, but from personal experience I have found the german shepherd to be the most loyal and intelligent. They have a natural herding instinct; not only do they watch the family (there people) but they also watch the door. There intelligence level supersedes alot of other breeds and if worked w/consistantly at a young age, they train and learn quickly. Thats probably why they are used alot as working dogs: police, seeing eye, etc. Mine is almost 11 now and still dont miss a beat if someones outside the house in middle of nite and dont belong there. :)

Depends what you want if for
I noticed some people wrote back small yappy dogs. I would qualify those as "Watch dogs" They alert, but can't do much about an intruder, but telling you about it is most of the battle!
The larger dogs bred to protect I would say. Your Dobermans, Rotties, GSD's should be naturally protective of home and family if bred and raised properly.

I would say a German Shepard. They are very protective, and normally very good with kids as well.
