She is 14 years old and lives with my Mom as I got married 3 years ago. SHE GOES to the bathroom ON THE CARPET. She has for about a year. Vet says nothing medically wrong she could see. I have twin daughters now who are one and the smell at my Moms house is NEVER going away. She cleans carpets, lysols, scrubs, burns candles..... I LOVE being at "home" but the smell makes it emberassing and GROSS.
Anyway........I have researched here and 2 products came up..........PetZyme and Natures Miricle. I am skeptical about any product. The area is HEAVILY soiled. Like I said she cleans her carpets weekly. SOOOOOOOOO if you have tried a product and it REALLY works for HEAVILY soiled cat urine stains.......PLEASE help. I am desperate and my Mom is miserable. Also, do you reccomend a black light and even though my Mom cleans it, is it dangerous for my 1 year old twins?? ANY input will be appriciated. Serious answers only please. Thanks

It works and they guarenetee it! It's pure microscience one molecule attaches to the odor molecule and changes it into a safe and non smelly molecule.
To solve the cat from going to the bathroom on the carpet, really the only thing you can do is to try to catch her in the act. But because of her age, she might be too set in her ways and not change.
If it becomes too much of a problem I would try to get a second opinion in case it is something hidden. Also it might just not like where her litterbox is or what litter you use.
Honestly, all you can do is eliminate the odor and try to retrain her to use the box.
I knew someone who's cat was having problems, but none of the vets could find anything wrong until the person researched the symptoms on the internet and told the vet what they found.
So that might be another option.
Good Luck

Black lights are pretty cheap. You should be able to pickup a hand held one for seeing urine stains for around $10.00.

Whenever a pet urinates, NEVER use water to clean it. All the water does is spread it out more. Always blot up as much as you can with a dry cloth or paper towels and then use an enzyme cleaner specifically for pet urine and use it EXACTLY as the directions tell you. The reason for that is you might not be able to smell it anymore, but an animal can if the scent is not totally nuetralized and then they will use the area again. So it's very important to clean it perfectly the first time it happens.

Which doesn't sound like your mother did so the cat has been using the carpet as a litter box ever since. Regular cleaners WILL NOT work. You have to use an enzyme cleaner for pet urine.

About the only thing your mother can do now aside from tearing the carpet up, having the underlying floor cleaned and the carpet replaced, is to have the carpet professionally cleaned for pet urine. It would make a nice Christmas gift to your mother seeing as you are the one that originally gave her the cat.

As the cat is old, she might be having trouble getting into the litter box if it's high sided. I have 2 older cats and I use a large plastic storage container for their litter box because they can easily step in and out of it. Also, your mother's cat might not like the litter your mother is using.

The cat's urinating on the carpet shouldn't affect your twins after it's been professionally cleaned, but between the lingering urine smellls and the carpet shampoo/cleaners right now, would you really want your kids down there? If anything the chemicals that linger in the carpet after cleaning probably would be more harmful than the pet urine.

First of all the problem is not the urinating the carpets or the smell, tackle the problem..... why is the cat urinating , why did she change. Did she use the cat box before or is she an outside toilet visiting cat? So lets analyse that first, then when and why did she change. Cats have and grow to have habits... Try seeing what it is and when she does it.. dont scold her! Then put a catbox straight on that spot and put a small piece of carpet in it... let her soil it and ;pray............... once she goes into that box slowly replace it with cat litter... each time she uses it praise her.. YES REALLY PRAISE the cat, make her feel safe and cared for... if she cant get into the catbox. take her to the vet, its physical but if she goesinto it... you have won half the battle.. try a bit of psychology and find out what may have altered her behaviour, visitors? children wetting carpet, grown up wetting it,, so all she did was rescent it. ... outside cat soiled the house? Cats are territorial! Lastly when you have solved the problem than at last you will be able to replace or re shampoo the carpets... Air freshners and re shampoing this special stuff lark... enzyme cleaners... forget it... Here in the UK we simply re shampoo it with a good machine and let it dry it should be fine, I have also a cat that occasionally slips into accidents i solve it make her feel safe and she stops doing it till the next time a tom cat sprays my front door... Argh..... Good Luck.

I have used vinegar straight from the bottle. Pour it on the spot after the accident has been cleaned up, let it sit about 5 mins. and then blot it up also. My guess is the smell has gotten into the padding under the carpet. Cats have a great sense of smell and will return to the scene of the crime every time. There are products out there that you can use. Once cleaned up to the best of her ability, should not be a danger to your kiddos. The other alternative is to pull up the carpet and padding, clean under it and lay new carpet or laminate hardwood floors.
Good luck

I recommend the Zero Odor product too. I have found it better than Nature's Miracle or any other cleaner.

Unfortunately if the kitty is going in the corners the urine may have soaked into the wood strips used to fasten the carpet down and the cleaner doesn't get that smell out. It also goes into the padding and cleaners don't always get to that. Don't use lysol.

It is not dangerous, just stinky.

I have cats and got rid of all carpet and have hardwood, stone and tile floors so I never have to worry. Since you say it is YOUR cat, and it is ruining your mother's floors, isn't your responsibility? Change her flooring.

Unfortunately when cats get older they tend to do that.
