Or does this go against their "doctrine." I'm thinking about starting the RCIA program. My children and husband are Catholic. I love our church, but haven't committed further yet. Any liberal Catholics out there?

No, you really can't but if you're most comfortable belonging to the Catholic church than don't worry about it too much. You can't help how you feel. You're drawn to Catholicism for a reason, concentrate on the positive stuff. A lot of people are very religious but don't quite agree with everything they are taught. Unfortunately, abortion and gay marriage are two big ones with the Catholics. I would only worry that you might feel you are being deceitful to the church or unfair to yourself if you follow through with RCIA. It's really up to you. I'm not comfortable calling myself a full member of any group unless I fully agree with them. Some people don't care because their need to belong is stronger than any conflicting personal belief they may have. It works for some people.

Unfortunately the Catholic Church's doctrine does not support either circumstance. Abortion is only an option if there is imminent danger to the mother's life and gay marriage is not an option by any means. The church counsels abstinence for gay parishioners as homosexuality is forbidden.
I myself find myself to be a more liberal Catholic. While I do not support abortion as a form of birth control I do find that there could be circumstances that would support the need. And I do not find gay marriage offensive. I don't believe being gay is a "choice". If God has a purpose for us all then this also is for a reason. Every person has to search their conscience and find their own path to peace. So I feel that yes you can have more liberal views and still be Catholic.

The REAL answer is no. I used to be a Catholic (atheist now (nothing to do with the Catholic Church)), and I've read the Catechism of the Catholic Church. Here is the TRUTH: You cannot be completely Catholic and be "pro-choice" and support gay marriage. People who are telling you differently either (a) haven't read the Catechism of the Catholic Church or (b) like to cherry-pick beliefs of Catholicism/the bible.

Hi, sorry to be such a prophet of doom but I must give you the truth and this is something pro-choice will not disclose to Catholics and that is if a Catholic man or woman willingly assists or in any way aids a woman to procure an abortion they are self excommunicated automatically and stay in this condition untill it is lifted by their Bishop.

Well first of all if your a christian a true christian you wouldnt want to support gay marriages because being gay is a abomination...Thats God rules not mine...Also the Catholic religion isnt right....Your not suppose to pray to the virgin Mary or to saints....You pray to God/Jesus...Also you dont need a priest to forgive you of your sins you now have a direct line to God...We arent living in the Old Testement times were that was needed...There is too much idol worshipping in the Catholic religion and thats breaking one of the 10 commandments...My opinion for you is to search your heart, read the bible and make your own choice...God bless you and your family....peace and love =)

Catholic is a type of Christian and Christinaity originates from the teachings of Jesus.

There are a lot of liberal catholics so you probably won't be a alone but just calling yourself a catholic and believing whatever suits you won't help you make real spiritual pogress. You are not being a true Christian. Jesus said 'you cannot have two masters. You cannot serve mammon and God at once'. Serving mammon means making choices based on your mental speculation, your physical conmfort, your desires (which spring from the mind).

ABORTION

Jesus said thou shalt not kill and aboriton is defintiely killing. just becuase the baby is still inside the womb doesnt mean its not a life. Life begins at conception. This is so easy to understand. I know there are lots of 'reasons' why people have abortions but if they knew the consequences of this killing, consequences that are not easily seen, karma (you reap what you sow) comes back life after life.

GAY MARRIAGE

This is also against God's will. Marriage is to help a person control their sex desire (just have one person) and grow closer to God within that union and have kids to bring up to know and love God. The love, if its real between any two people is pleasing to God but homosexual sex is not. I am not speaking from a bible platform but from an understanding of the nature of material desires and how they separate us actually form God, who is Spirit.

Whatever your religious beliefs are , they should involve your own actions for yourself only and leave room for the acceptance of the beliefs and actions of others . You may be a devout catholic , or anything else , and still accept the rights of others to choose for themselves what is right for them. Is that not the highest form of true religion ?
