Hi, my wifey is 8mo Pregnant with our first child. Latley our Golden Retriver Puppy (1 yr) has had a huge intrest in sniffing her groin area. Can the pup smell the baby in her tummy? Thanks for the help.

the dog doesn't actually smell the baby, but he smells the hormonal changes. it's good to let him smell cause her hormones will continue to change throughout the prenancy. when the baby is born, let your dog around the baby, but also let him know it's YOUR baby, not his. give him boundries of say 3 feet. that's so he doesn't accidently sit or roll on the new baby, and to let him know that the baby is not a lower rank in the pack.

Congrats on the baby.

I believe they can sense/smell the changes in your wife.

I have several reasons why I believe this is possible.

One of my uncles was epileptic and the dogs alerted when about 15-30 minutes before an episode. He then had time to get to a safe place or he would send the dog to get someone in the family to come to him. They lived on farm and sometimes he would be working out in a far field when it happened and could not get back to house fast enough.

Another one of my uncles had cancer. The dogs sensed it when he was having a really bad day and has it got worse.

My dogs alert when my mom is ill and bark or whine until I check on her. They did it just today as a matter of fact.

So yes in my opinion some dogs can either smell or sense changes in a person's body.

Someone just recently told me that dogs can hear heart beats. If that is true then I'm sure they can hear the baby too. Dogs can sometimes sense things that we are not aware of. All dogs like the smell of peoples privates. Never met a dog I saw turn away from a quick sniff, LOL! Maybe the dog hears the baby kicking. Good luck!

i believe they can - my normally very excitable, strong dog was very different around me during both my pregnancies.from the moment i fell, before i even knew i was pregnant, she no longer jumped up on me & was very gentle & "sooky". in fact it was her that tipped me off the second time around!. as my bump developed she would come to me when i was sitting down and rest her head on my tummy . before bringing both children home we gave the dog a handtowel that had the babys smell on it to get her used to it-she is now fantastic with them .

yes. dogs can receive messages by smelling your genital area. thats why dogs sniff each others butts...get an idea about what this other dog is about.

they can probably smell the chemical changes in your wifes discharge or urine residue.

yes they can. apart from all that, dogs are smart and Man's best friend.
A dog can sense a thunder coming or a storm! Amazing.
Congratulations to you and your wife!
