A plane flying across the sky leaving a long white tail behind it could be anything from a fighter jet to a 777 taking kids to grandmas house. The white tail behind it is nothing more than a vapor trail similar to the steam that comes out when you breath in the winter

These are produced by jets at higher altitudes and are known as "contrails" or "condensation trails". The condensation that is produced by the temperature differences between the jet/turbine exhaust gases and the air, and the freezing temperatures at those altitudes produce the effect and are actually streaks of clouds composed of ice crystals. As a side note, air temperature will typically decrease about 2 degrees per thousand feet of gain in altitude. So if the temperature on the surface is 15 degrees celcius (59 F), one could expect the temperature to be about -5 degrees celcius at 10,000'

For the other part of your question...if you notice that several streaks seem to be in the same direction....it's probably due to the various aircraft tracking the same jet route. Google an image of a "High Altitude Chart" and that will show you what the "highways in the sky" look like!

The long lines that you are seeing behind these aircraft are known as contrails. This happens when the exhaust from the engines, which is at a very high heat, mixes with the cold air at the high altitudes and creates a cloud like line. Most of the aircraft that you see are probably just commercial aircraft although some may be military aircraft as well.

Its actually snow , formed by jet engine. The hot exhaust gases freeze in the sub zero temperatures of atmosphere. No need to lose sleep over it.

I don't know much about this because I'm only 16, but
i think they are contrails caused by any jet or turbine engine. Wikipedia has a scientific explanation- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Contrails

yeah, those jets in the sky aren't always military jets, they are mostly cargo or passenger jets though. There are way more passenger jets flying than military jets flying.

Actually they are mostly passenger and cargo aircraf.

The contrails are caused by the same means as clouds.

Its jet fuel being jettisoned to reduce the landing weight.
