Blood transfusion is needed usually when the disorder concerns blood of course. There are several blood preparations for blood transfusion. Certain diseases like hemorrhagic fever, dengue fever will need a "Platelet concentrate" ( one component of blood) for transfusion. Anemia, VA (Vehicular accidents and other conditions resulting to blood loss or hemorrhage ) usually need "whole blood" transfusions. etc.

Please see the webpages for more details on Blood transfusion and Blood transfusion reaction.
Transfusion of blood has become commonplace in modern hospital and surgical practice. The fact that a patient gets a blood transfusion does not mean that he is dangerously ill or on the critical list. The value of whole blood as a treatment agent has been amply demonstrated since World War II.
Most blood transfusions today are indirect transfusions, that is, from blood stored under refrigeration in a hospital blood bank. To the blood given by the donor has been added a preservative, such as sodium citrate, that prevents clotting. The transfused blood is dripped into a vein of the recepient though a plastic or rubber tube and a hollow needle inserted into vein. Arm veins are generally used because they are most accessible.
Transfusion today is safe and common because the blood of the donor is matched with the blood of the recipient.
All major operations such as Hysterectomy, Complicated child delivery cases, CABG, Cancer surgery, Road accident victims require blood transfusion. Similarly leukemia patients need regular blood (platelet) transfusion.
